Brown Helps Power Way To 65-51 Win At Ohio

ATHENS, OH – Fifth-year senior Kourtney Brown notched her second straight 30-point performance on Saturday as the Bulls defeated Ohio, 65-51, at the Convocation Center. The win improves UB's record to 9-8 on the season and evens up its conference record at 2-2.
The Bobcats never led by more than two points as the two teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the game, Down 8-6 early on, fifth-year senior Ashley Zuber hit back-to-back threes to give the Bulls a 12-8 lead and they never looked back. UB proceeded to go on a 13-2 run to take its largest lead of the half at nine on a jumper from Brown with 9:57 left in the half. The Bulls continued to lead by nine with 7:58 to go in the half, however the Bulls would score just two more points the rest of the half, while Ohio cut into the lead as the Bulls went into the half up just one at 26-25.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second half and UB was leading 32-31 when a quick 7-2 run put the Bulls up by six. It would go on to become a 19-7 UB run putting the Bulls up 53-38 with 9:30 to go in the half. UB led by as many as 17 in the contest, coming on a three pointer from Nicki Hopkins with 7:10 left. The Bobcats got it to within 13 once, but got no closer in the game.
"I am really pleased with the way we came out in the second half after what was a very sloppy first half," said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. "We ran well in transition and got Kourtney the ball even though the defense knew she was coming and from there she just finished like she always does."
Brown led the way with 31 points and 16 rebounds, both game highs. The double-double was the 39th of her career and the second straight game she has went over 30 points. Brown also finished with three blocks to give her 200 for her career.
Hedderson had 10 points, all coming in the second half. Eight of her points came in a row in the middle of the half. Zuber had eight points and a game-high nine assists, while adding four rebounds. Senior Jessica Fortman added five points, a season-high 11 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals. Hopkins added nine points off the bench on three treys.
The Bulls held Ohio to just 51 points and just 27.5 percent from the floor. The Bobcats went 1-of-15 from behind the arc and just 12-of-20 from the charity stripe. Ohio, who took 14 more shots than the Bulls, were led 17 points from Tenishia Benson, who added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Shavon Robinson had 16 points, while Kamille Buckner added 13 rebounds.
The Bulls return home on Tuesday night as they wrap up the first round of games against the MAC East with a contest against Bowling Green. Tip off with the Falcons is set for 7:00 pm.
