
Bulls Fall To Host Mountaineers, 3-1

MORGANTOWN, WV – The University at Buffalo volleyball team split its opening day matches, falling to West Virginia on Saturday night, 3-1. The loss evens UB's record to 1-1 on the season, following this morning's 3-0 win over Youngstown State.
The Mountaineers took the match 26-28, 25-13, 25-22, 26-24 as they outhit the Bulls .215 to .084. UB did win the opening set after holding off a late West Virginia rally to win 28-26. The Mountaineers had an easy victory in the second set, but UB fought to the end in both the third and fourth sets.
The Mountaineers led by as much as 16-9 in the third set before the Bulls would pull within 18-17. It is as close as UB got in the set, falling 25-22. In the fourth set the Bulls overcame an early West Virginia lead, taking a 16-15 advantage. Down 23-19, the Bulls scored three straight points before West Virginia had its first match point at 24-22. Two straight UB points tied the match up at 24, but the Mountaineers finished the match with the next two points.
Senior Kristin Bignell had 11 kills and just one error on 25 swings, while freshman Christine Fritsche recorded her first double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Dana Musil just missed her first career double-double with nine kills and 10 digs.
Freshman Kelly Svoboda finished with a career-high 25 digs, while senior Lindsey Schlegel recorded 25 assists, nine digs and three service aces. As a team, the Bulls recorded 10 service aces in the match.
The Bulls conclude play at the West Virginia Classic tomorrow morning when they face Howard at 11:00 am.
