BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team wrapped up its second week with its annual Blue and White scrimmage, getting ready for next Saturday's season opener at the West Virginia Tournament. The scrimmage was the public's first chance to see UB's six newcomers in action.
The Bulls used multiple combinations to field their Blue and White squads, including some action from the UB assistant coaches. The White team ultimately won the contest, 25-21, 21-25, 28-26 in an abbreviated best of three contest. Several veterans started the evening where they left off last year, posting solid numbers. Junior Abby Niekamp had 14 kills on 34 swings, while senior Kristin Bignell added five kills and six blocks. Senior Lindsey Schlegel, who spent time setting for both squads, combined for 28 assists and 11 digs. Junior Heather Pyle finished with 21 digs on the evening. Senior Kayla Govier also had five kills on the night, while Marisa Hornbaker added four kills and 10 digs.
The newcomers had plenty of opportunities and they took advantage. Outside hitter Christine Fritsche had 12 kills, eight digs and a service ace, while freshman libero Kelly Svoboda combined for 24 digs, nine assists and two service aces. Setter Dani Reinert finished with 30 assists and seven digs, while Dana Musil had 10 kills and 14 digs. Middle blocker Carissa McKenna added seven kills and six total blocks. Transfer Alexa Manuel added eight kills on 12 attempts, without an error.
"It was good to finally see our veterans and newcomers play together in a game setting," said head coach Todd Kress. "I thought they worked very hard out there and had good chemistry. The important thing now is to fine tune some of those errors as we get ready to open our season next weekend."
The Bulls begin the season at the West Virginia Tournament on Saturday morning against Youngstown State.
