Brown Nets Career High In Loss To Cleveland State

BUFFALO, NY – Senior Kourtney Brown added to an already impressive career on Monday night as she recorded a new career high with 34 points in a 78-69 loss to Cleveland State. Brown added 16 rebounds for her eighth straight double-double and the 31st of her career.
UB got off to an impressive start, scoring the first eight points of the game. The 8-0 lead would wind up being Buffalo's largest of the game. The Vikings then went on a 16-7 run to take their first lead of the game. The two teams traded baskets, before Cleveland State went on a 9-0 run just before half, taking an eight-point lead into the lockerroom.
Cleveland State went on to take its biggest lead of the game at 10 with 16:37 left, but the Bulls would go on a 22-11 run over the next eight minutes to retake the lead at 54-53 with 8:25 to go in the contest. With the two teams tied up at 56-56, the Vikings went on a 10-0 run over the next three and a half minutes to retake the advantage. Buffalo got it to within four on two separate occasions, including with 2:22 left, but the Vikings responded with a basket. The Vikings went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line over the last minute to preserve the win.
Brown notched a career-best 34 points, bettering her 33-point effort from a year ago against Niagara. She had 16 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards. The 11 offensive board tie her career-high from the Niagara game. She also added four blocks, to pull with one block of the school record. Her 16 rebounds give her 779 for her career, moving her into fifth place all-time. Her 14 made field goals on the night now give her 540, which is third all-time.
Also finishing in double figures was junior Brittany Hedderson, who had 11 points, four assists, a block and two steals. Senior Jessica Fortman and junior Ephesia Holmes each had eight points. Fortman also added nine rebounds and two blocks. Senior Ashley Zuber had seven assists and two steals on the night.
Cleveland State was led by four players in double figures. Janelle Adams had a team-high 23 points and nine rebounds, while Shalonda Winton and Shawnita Garland each finished with 18. Takima Keane finished with 13 points.
The Bulls now hit the road for five straight beginning this Friday night at Temple. Tip off against the Owls is set for 7:00 pm.
