- 2007
- Class:
- 1942
Pioneering Award
1940-41 (BA '42, JD '44)
- The 1st woman to have played on a varsity men's team at UB, Belle Farrar Theobald was "drafted" to participate on the men's tennis team after a player (and friend) became ill and was unable to compete.
- Competed on the 1940 (2-3 record) and '41 (7-1) teams; during her final year of play, the squad's record was, at that time, the best ever in the program.
- In her first match, as a sophomore, she defeated her singles opponent in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) as UB defeated the University of Rochester (7-2) for the 1st time in 5 years.
- Belle played primarily 6th singles in her 1st season, then 2nd and 3rd singles the following year, as well as 2nd doubles with the team captain.
- A Phi Beta Kappa, she captured the Buffalo Muny singles and doubles championships in back-to-back years while attending UB.
- Her exploits on the Buffalo-area tennis scene were cited by the Buffalo Evening News as among the area's top 10 sports highlights of 1940.
