Cecilia Blanchard begins her first season as assistant coach on the Buffalo volleyball staff. Blanchard comes to the Bulls from her alma mater Virginia Commonwealth University where she served as a graduate assistant last year. Her primary focus was on the VCU setters, helping Katrina Davis be named All-A10 Second Team and a three-time A10 Setter of the Week. She was also an integral part of the setter's scouting report and offensive strategies.
Prior to returning to VCU, Blanchard was an assistant coach at Fullerton Community College with both the indoor and beach programs, the latter which won the first-ever Orange Empire Conference beach championship in 2021 with an undefeated record. While on the West Coast, Blanchard was the head coach at the Rosary Academy and also worked as a head coach with the ProPlay Volleyball Club.
A native of Recife, Brazil, Blanchard spent three seasons playing volleyball overseas beginning in the Champions League in Slovenia where she was named the best setter of the Slovenian Cup. Blanchard also spent time in France and Switzerland playing in League A in both countries.
She earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Education at VCU, while serving as a four-year member of the volleyball program. A four-year starter, Blanchard racked up 3,932 assists in four seasons, which ranks third on the Rams all-time list. Blanchard is also sixth in VCU history with 370 total blocks. As a freshman, Blanchard helped lead the Rams to an appearance in the CAA Championship match where she was named to the CAA All-Tournament Team, as well as the VaSID All-State Second Team. In 2014, Blanchard was a first-team All-A10 selection and again named second team All-State by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
Blanchard lives in North Tonawanda with her husband Matt, a former standout baseball pitcher at VCU.
