AMHERST, Mass. – The University at Buffalo softball team (17-21 6-7 MAC) lost to the UMass Minutewomen (12-21, 4-9 MAC) on Tuesday afternoon, 3-2.
It was a low scoring affair at Sortino Field in Amherst, Mass. on Tuesday. Emily Gorman started the affair off with a walk followed by stealing second base. She would unfortunately get stranded on the basepaths. UMass got on the board first in a singe through the left side of the infield to make it 1-0 after the first inning.
Bri Delaney started the second inning reaching second base on an error by the left fielder, but similar to Gorman, she was stranded in scoring position.
Still trailing 1-0, in the third, they Bulls had a solid start to the inning. Ava Thelen led with a walk as Gorman reached base on an error allowing Thelen to reach third. Gorman got out on the play as she tried to advance to second. Thelen wasn't brought home as UMass still led, 1-0.
The Minutewomen add to their lead in the bottom half of the inning. An RBI double to left center scored the runner from first base to make it 2-0.
The Bulls came around to score in the fourth as Delaney Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Delaney.
UMass immediately got the run back to make it 3-1 as a double steal scored a run.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Delaney led the inning off with a double to left. Lily Lauck singled through the left side to put runners on the corners with one out. Back-to-back outs ended the inning and Buffalo's threat.
The Bulls attempted a comeback in the seventh inning. After a strikeout, Reagan Terwilliger hit a double to left. She advanced to third following a ground out. Bella Smithson drilled her in as she doubled to right center. With the tying run in scoring position, the Minutewomen got out of the jam with a pop out to shallow right field to end the game.
Delaney went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Genevieve Longsdorf tossed 6.0 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out three Minutewomen.
The Bulls are back in action on Wednesday when they finish up their series against UMass with a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
