Bulls Face Rockets in Regular Season Finale

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball program (17-13, 7-10 MAC) will play their final regular season game of the season on Friday as they'll travel to Toledo to face the Rockets (16-14, 10-7 MAC). Tip-off from Savage Arena is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Josh Whetzel will be on the radio call on Buffalo 1520/Rochester 1280 and on the Varsity Network App.
This will be the lone meeting between the Bulls and Rockets this season. Last season, Buffalo snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Rockets on March 1st, 87-74.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bulls are coming off a 72-67 home win over the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Tuesday. Ryan Sabol led the Bulls with 27 points as he went 5-of-9 from deep. In his final game in Alumni Arena, Noah Batchelor scored 13 points with four rebounds and a block. Angelo Brizzi added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Tim Oboh had four of Buffalo's five blocks as he also snatched 10 boards. EMU was held to 2-of-12 from three-point range.
With the win, the Bulls stayed alive for MAC Tournament contention.
MAC TOURNAMENT CLINCHING SCENARIOS
• Toledo Head Coach Tod Kowalczyk is in his 16th season with the Rockets where he's led them to a 312-210 (.598) overall record. Prior to his time in Toledo, he spent eight seasons at Green Bay (2002-10). In his 24-year career, he holds an overall record of 448-322 (.582). He is 12-11 against Buffalo in his career.
• The Rockets were selected sixth in the 13-team league in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Poll with 95 points. Sonny Wilson was named to the Preseason All-MAC Second Team.
• The Rockets are led by Sonny Wilson as he's averaging 17.1 ppg and 4.5 apg. Leroy Blyden Jr. (16.1 ppg) is second in scoring as Sean Craig is the team's top rebounder at 7.4 rpg.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
• Ryan Sabol is tied with program record holder Zach Filzen's 2010-11 season with 110 made threes this year. They are the only Bulls to record 100 threes in a single season.
• Daniel Freitag is the first Bull to make 150+ free throws in a single season since Justin Moss made 173 in 2014-15. Freitag is currently eighth in program history for most free throws made with 158.
• Ryan Sabol became the first Bull to record a 500-point, 100-assist season since CJ Massinburg did so in 2018-19. The only other Bulls to record such a season are Blake Hamilton (2016-17) and current General Manager Turner Battle in 2004-05.
• Ryan Sabol is the first Bull to record back-to-back 400-point seasons since Jeenathan Williams did so from 2020-22.
• Angelo Brizzi recorded Buffalo's first 50-steal season since Zid Powell did so in 2022-23 when he finished with 53. Brizzi has 53 steals on the season.
• Tim Oboh is third in the MAC in blocks per game and total blocks with 1.8 and 31, respectfully.
• For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Bulls have three players with 80+ assists each. Ryan Sabol and Derrick Talton Jr. each have 102 with Daniel Freitag adding 87.
• In the month of February, Angelo Brizzi led the Bulls in scoring in four of the seven games where he averaged 22.3 ppg, good for the best average and point total (156) in the MAC in that span.
• UB has made 288 three-pointers so far this season. 36.8% of their points have come from three-point range, the top mark in the MAC ahead of Akron's 36.6%.
• UB has recorded 35 20-point performances this season. Last year they finished with just 16 such games. This is the most 20-point games since they recorded 37 in 2018-19.
