BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team (10-17, 3-3 MAC) hosted Kent State (12-13, 4-2 MAC) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls split the day with the Golden Flashes, but took the weekend series by winning two of three games.
GAME ONE
The Bulls jumped out to an early four-run lead in game one and never looked back, winning the contest, 6-4.
The team got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after blanking the Golden Flashes, batting around the order to take an early four run lead. Emily Gorman began the inning with a single. Three fielders' choices, a wild pitch, a pass ball and an error helped the Bulls score four, with the team capitalizing on Kent State's mistakes. Bri Delaney, Nicole Allen and Ardyn Hopf all batted in runs in the inning.
Reagan Terwilliger got it going for the Bulls again in the bottom of the second, circling the bases to add a run. The junior hit a single to left field to get on base, then stole second and third to put herself in scoring position. Delaney put a ball on the ground to score Terwilliger on a fielder's choice and extend the Buffalo lead to five runs.
Kent State scored four runs in the top of the third, but the Bulls added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Allen singled to left field, moving Miranda Zipp to second base. Hopf singled to center field, scoring Zipp to add a run, making it 6-4. The Bulls held the lead through the sixth and seventh innings to earn the win.
Olivia Russ got credit for the win, pitching two innings, striking out two batters and allowing four runs on four hits. Kent State threatened in the top of the second inning, putting two runners on base with one out. Russ worked out of the jam, getting a Golden Flash to pop out into foul territory. The junior struck out the next batter to give the Bulls the bats back.
Malena Toth took over for the Bulls in the top of the third, with two runners on, no outs and a two-run lead. Toth worked out of the jam and went on to pitch five scoreless innings for the Bulls, allowing just three hits and giving up one walk. The sophomore earned a save for the effort.
GAME TWO
The Golden Flashes began the scoring early in game two and never looked back, defeating the Bulls 7-1.
Kent State jumped out to an early lead, hitting a solo home run in the top of the first. The Golden Flashes added another run in the top of the second, but the Bulls responded in the bottom of the inning. Delaney Ellis hit a sacrifice fly deep to right field to score Abbey Nagel from third base, cutting the Kent State lead to just a run.
The Golden Flashes added two more runs to their lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run. Kent State extended its lead in the top of the fifth, scoring three more runs to make it a 7-1 game.
