BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team (9-16, 2-2 MAC) defeated Kent State 14-1 in the series opener on a cold and wet day at Nan Harvey Field on Friday.
The visitors struck first on an RBI triple in the top of the first, but the Bulls answered as Bri Delaney crushed a two-RBI double to left and Nicole Allen followed with an RBI single to left to put UB up 4-1 at the end of the first.
Buffalo then broke the game open in the second inning as Bella Smithson drilled a double to right, plating three runs, to extend the UB lead to 7-1 at the end of the second. Allen and Tabitha von Kolen then reached on a fielder's choice and the Bulls took advantage of a pair of Kent State errors to add to the lead before Emily Gorman singled home a runner to cap a nine-run inning for Buffalo to give the Bulls a 13-1 lead.
UB added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth off the bat of Smithson who knocked an RBI single up the middle to put UB up 14-1 and that would be the final.
Smithson led the Bulls with three hits and four RBI on the day, while Gorman also recorded a multi-hit game. Sophomore Genevieve Longsdorf had a solid outing in the circle, allowing just four hits and one run in a complete game effort.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader to close out the series against the Golden Flashes. First pitch is set for 1pm.
