The Bulls Earn their First Victory of the Plimpton Era at the UCF Black & Gold Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University at Buffalo softball team (1-1, 0-0 MAC) split their season opening games on Friday at the Black & Gold Classic hosted by UCF. After falling to the Maryland Terrapins, 10-3, the Bulls bounced back for an 8-6 win over CSU Bakersfield. This marked Head Coach Chelsea Plimpton's first career win at the helm.
GAME 1 VS. MARYLAND
The Bulls fell into an early 2-0 hole in the top of the first as Maryland scored on an RBI double and a wild pitch. Buffalo responded in the bottom half of the inning as Abbey Nagel his a bases loaded sac fly that scored Emily Gorman. Reagan Terwilliger ripped the ball at the third baseman the following at bat that forced an error which resulted in Bri Delaney to tie the game. Nicole Allen gave the Bulls a 3-2 lead as she scored on a wild pitch.
The score remained 3-2 until the top of the seventh inning as neither team could get the bats going. The seventh inning wasn't too kind to the Bulls as Maryland scored eight runs on seven hits and an error. Buffalo could only muster up one hit in the bottom half of the seventh as Maryland won, 10-3.
Genevieve Longsdorf tossed a solid 4.1 innings for the Bulls as she allowed two runs on four hits and a walk.
At the dish, Emily Gorman went 3-for-3 with a run scored. This was the fifth time in her career she recorded a three-hit performance. Nicole Allen added a pair of singles and a run for the Bulls.
GAME 2 VS. CSU BAKERSFIELD
Buffalo bounced back in their second game of the day against the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners. After a scoreless first inning, the Bulls broke through in the bottom of the second. Reagan Terwilliger and Bella Smithson recorded back-to-back singles before Ardyn Hopf ripped in Terwilliger to put the Bulls ahead, 1-0.
Buffalo's two-out hitting was clutch in the third inning. With Nicole Allen and Abbey Nagel on base, Bri Delaney forced a throwing error by the shortstop which allowed Allen to score from second. Reagan Terrwilliger reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop as both Nagel and Delaney came around to score to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead. Terwilliger stole second base following a pitching change, but advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Smithson put the ball in play, but a throwing error by the Roadrunners' pitcher gave Buffalo the opportunity to go up 5-0 as Terwilliger scored.
The momentum carried over into the fourth inning as the Bulls padded their lead. Emily Gorman started the inning with a leadoff single to left. After Gorman stole second base, Allen singled to left but a fielding error by the left fielder allowed the ball to go all the way to the fence and Allen came around to score. The Bulls led after four innings, 7-0.
The Roadrunners responded in the top of the fifth. They managed to scored three runs on three hits and a walk. In the sixth, CSU Bakersfield cut into Buffalo's lead as a throwing error gave them another run to make it a 7-4 Buffalo lead. Gorman steered the ship in the right direction in the bottom half of the inning with the team's first homerun of the season to give the Bulls an 8-4 lead.
The Roadrunners had a small rally in the top of the seventh. After a pair of hits, a double to right field gave them two runs to come home. Leading 8-6, Genevieve Longsdorf came in and shut the door for the two-out save.
Olivia Russ earned the win as she threw 4.1 innings. She allowed three runs on six hits and a walk. Ardyn Hopf went 3-for-3 against the Roadrunners with an RBI as Gorman and Allen had two hits apiece.
