GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University at Buffalo softball team (2-5, 0-0 MAC) lost both their games on Friday's opening doubleheader at the East Carolina Pirate Clash. After falling to Maryland in extras, 3-2, they lost to host East Carolina, 8-7.
GAME 1 VS. MARYLAND
It was a tight battle with no room for error against the Maryland Terrapins. In a rematch from last week's season opener, the Bulls nearly beat the Terrapins on Friday morning. It was a scoreless affair in the first inning, before the Terrapins struck first on a solo home run.
In the bottom of the second, the Bulls tied the game as Bella Smithson drove in Bri Delaney. The score remained 1-1 after seven innings of play as they headed to extras.
Starting the inning with a runner on second base, it didn't take long for Maryland to strike first as a two-run bomb to left field put them in front, 3-1.
With Abbey Nagel starting on second base, Smithson's single to left put runners on the corners with one out. Delaney Ellis pinch hit and put the ball in play. On the play, the shortstop made an error as the Bulls cut into the lead, 3-2. The bases would soon be loaded after an Emily Gorman single through the right side. Unfortunately, the Bulls couldn't push a run or two across the plate as a pair of fly outs ended the game.
GAME 2 AT EAST CAROLINA
The Bulls jumped out to an early lead against the Pirates in their second game of the day. Reagan Terwilliger earned a walk to be the Bulls' first base runner. Abbey Nagel singled through the left side to advance Terwilliger to third. With runners on the corners, Nicole Allen drove Terwilliger home to give Buffalo the early 1-0 lead. With runners on first and second, Lily Lauck loaded the bases with a walk. Bri Delaney earned a walk to score Nagel. Bella Smithson hit a sacrifice fly to put Buffalo in front, 3-0.
The lead didn't last long as the Pirates scored four runs on four hits and an error. They managed to hit a two-run blast to right field.
The score remained 4-3 in favor of East Carolina until the Pirates added to their lead in the fourth inning. The Pirates opened the flood gates following an RBI double to right center. East Carolina led 8-3 after four innings of play.
Despite being down five, the Bulls kept their foot on the gas. Delaney drove a deep fly ball to center field that resulted in a three-run home run to make it an 8-6 ball game. In their final at bat, Delaney's bat stayed hot as the had a lead off double to left center. Allen dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Delaney over to third base. Delaney Ellis singled up the middle to drive in Delaney and make it an 8-7 Pirate lead. The Bulls failed to tie the game and force the bottom of the seventh as back-to-back flyouts down the right field line ended the game.
