BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bulls (1-1, 0-0 MAC) won their Saturday matinee against the visiting Marist Red Foxes (0-3, 0-0 MAAC), 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19.
Preseason All-MAC honoree Manoela Forlin led the offensive attack for the Bulls. The Brazil native finished with match highs in points (23.5), kills (18) and aces (5). She also added 10 digs to round out her second career double-double. Forlin hit .389 on the afternoon. Also helping the offense were freshmen Sydney Bell and Emerson Matthews. Bell tallied 10 kills and 11 points as Matthews totaled 12 kills and 14.5 points. Tehya Shaw had an efficient day on the attack as she had five kills on eight attempts for a .625 hitting percentage. Maddie Mitchell had a solid double-double with 35 assists and 11 digs.
Defensively, Keira Kleidon was perfect on her 29 receptions to go along with her 27 digs. At the net, Reese Collins had four total blocks as both Matthews and Shaw had three each.
SET 1
The Bulls' offense clicked right from the beginning as they hit .464 to Marist's .206. It was all Buffalo through the set as Marist's only lead came at 5-4. Forlin was deadly from the service line as she had three aces in the set. UB tallied three blocks as Marist did not record any action at the net.
SET 2
Buffalo's offense had a hiccup in the second set as a slow start gave Marist a 5-1 lead. The Bulls managed to take the lead three different times, including a 20-18 lead. Following a Marist timeout, momentum swung in the Red Foxes favor as they finished the set on a 7-2 run to take the set.
SET 3
The Bulls bounced back as they won the third set, 25-22. UB's defense held the Red Foxes to a .119 hitting percentage. The Bulls' defense finished with 27 digs as Kleidon had 15 of her own. The Bulls found themselves down 17-12, but erased the deficit. Down 20-17, Buffalo closed the set on an 8-2 run to complete the comeback.
SET 4
It was a wire-to-wire set win for the Bulls as they led by as many as seven points. Buffalo's offense was once again stellar on the attack as they had a .467 hitting percentage in the fourth set. They finished with 18 kills to Marist's 12.
"Our young squad bounced back well today after letting errors get the best of us against Liberty," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "I felt we made much stronger decisions attacking today and worked through issues with the different lineups we've been experimenting with. Our defensive intensity also picked up considerably, led by Keira Kleidon. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are happy with earning the win today."
UP NEXT
The Bulls will host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final match of the Buffalo Invite presented by UB Dental.
