Bulls Sweep Cardinals in Saturday Doubleheader

MUNCIE, Ind. – The University at Buffalo softball team (16-28, 9-12 MAC) swept the home Ball State Cardinals (28-14, 13-7 MAC) on Saturday afternoon, 6-3 and 5-3. The last time the Bulls won two games at Ball State was in the 2016 season.
GAME 1
The Bulls won the first game of the day, 6-3, behind a 4-run fourth inning.
The Bulls trailed the first three innings, 2-0, but the offense came alive in the fourth inning. Reagan Terwilliger hit a lead-off double to left center followed by an Abbey Nagel single to left. With runners on the corners, they advanced after a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game. Isabella Smithson then walked to put runners on first and second. Lily Lauck reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Avelyn Van Heyst singled up the middle to score Nagel and give the Bulls the lead. Ardyn Hopf walked to load the bases which allowed Ava Thelen to hit a sacrifice fly to left center to score Lauck and give the Bulls the lead. Talynn Williams singled to center to score Van Heyst and make it 4-2.
In the fifth, Terwilliger tripled to right center and would later score on a Smithson ground out. The Cardinals cut into the Bulls' lead to make it 5-3.
Smithson hit an RBI single to center to extend their lead to 6-3 in the seventh as Emily Gorman came around to score.
Olivia Russ closed the game out in the seventh to earn her third save of the season.
GAME 2
After two scoreless innings, Ball State captured a 1-0 lead on an RBI double to center.
The Bulls got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Ardyn Hopf hit a lead-off double to left followed by Ava Thelen reaching base on a hit by pitch. Miranda advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. Emily Gorman hit a sacrifice fly to right that advanced the runners and tie the game. Reagan Terwilliger then his a triple to center to score Thelen and take the 2-1 lead. Abbey Nagel followed suit with an RBI single to center to put Buffalo in front, 3-1.
Ball State scored in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to center to make it 3-2.
The Bulls added to their lead as Lily Lauck led the inning with a walk to allow Avelyn Van Heyst to hit an RBI double down the right field line. The Bulls led 4-2 headed to the sixth where they added an insurance run to go up 5-2.
The Cardinals only came up with a solo home run in the seventh inning as the Bulls won the contest, 5-3.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow as they wrap up their series at Ball State at noon. Catch the MACtion on ESPN+.
