Bulls Host Canisius on Wednesday Before Traveling to Ball State for Weekend Series

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (12-28, 7-12 MAC) will host Big 4 rival Canisius (21-18, 11-6 MAAC) for a doubleheader at Nan Harvey Field on Wednesday. The Bulls will then travel to Muncie, Ind. for more MACtion with a three-game series against the Ball State Cardinals (28-11, 13-5 MAC). The series will begin on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The series will be streamed on ESPN+.
On the season, junior first baseman Abbey Nagel leads the team with 44 hits, including a team-high 5 home runs and 16 extra base hits. Freshman Isabella Smithson is also up to 5 dingers and a team-high 31 RBIs on the season. Freshman Emily Gorman leads the Bulls with a .432 batting average and .562 on base percentage. Lily Lauck is just behind with a .463 on base percentage as she's reached base with a team-high 32 base on balls. Her 0.80 walks per game is 27th in the nation. Mia Mitchell has 12 extra base hits, 2 of which have gone for triples.
The Bulls are coming off a series win over the Toledo Rockets (14-26, 7-12 MAC) last weekend. The Bulls won in a slug-fest to open the series with a 21-14 decision over Toledo. The Bulls combined to break six program records in the first game of the day. The Bulls set four team records with 21 runs scored (19 vs. Southern, 2/7/14), 20 RBIs (18 vs. Southern, 2/7/14), 11 runs in a single inning (9 vs. Toledo, 4/6/12) and 12 walks (10 at Akron, 3/19/21). Reagan Terwilliger set the program record for most runs scored in a game with 5 (4, three times) as Abbey Nagel tied the single game home run record with 2. Nagel's 2 home runs make it the 14th time in program history a Bull has hit 2 homers in a game. The Bulls then went on to beat Toledo in the second game, 8-2. Olivia Russ went the distance in the circle as she allowed 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out a pair. Miranda Zipp and Abbey Nagel led the Bulls with 2 hits each. To close out the weekend on Sunday, Toledo won 3-1. All of the runs in the game were scored in a home run. Isabella Smithson gave the Bulls their lone run with a solo shot to center in the fourth inning.

NOTES: The Bulls and Golden Griffins split last year's doubleheader at Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday, May 1st. Buffalo was victorious in the first game, 10-2, but fell 2-0 in the second game. The last time the Golden Giffins played at Nan Harvey Field came in the 2019 season. Canisius is currently 11-6 in the MAAC, good for fifth in the standings.

NOTES: The Ball State Cardinals won last year's series in Buffalo, 2-1. The Bulls won game one, 7-6, but fell in the final two games, 13-9 and 7-1. The Cardinals have won six of the last seven games against the Bulls. The Bulls' last road win against the Cardinals came in the 2016 season when they took two of three from the MAC foe. Ball State is currently 13-5 in the MAC and is in third place behind Central Michigan (15-5) and Miami (OH) (14-4).
