BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo track and field program is set to compete at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic this Saturday through Monday. The three-day competition will begin at 11:30 am on Saturday, resuming at 10:30 am on Sunday, then wrapping up on Monday with the women's heptathlon at 10 am.
The Bulls enter their fourth weekend of outdoor competition looking to continue their momentum. In the past two weeks the program has set two new school records and posted 12 all-time top ten performances.
At the Geneseo Spring Opener last Saturday, Aiden Walker broke the men's discus throw record that had been standing atop the UB outdoor record book for 15 years. Walker's mark of 57.26 meters surpassed Mac Gac's record (56.39m) set in 2010. The junior also won the shot put at Geneseo with a mark of 14.99 meters. Walker is scheduled to compete in both events again this weekend at Bucknell.
Luke Stoeffler was the first student-athlete to set a new school record this season, posting a time of 9:02.16 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at NC State's Raleigh Relays. Stoeffler's time broke an 11-year record set by Alec Peinkofer in 2014 (9:03.45). The senior is set to compete in the event this Saturday at Bucknell. Stoeffler will be joined by freshman Collin Stafford and sophomore Gabriel Cornfield, each looking to make their mark in the program record book. Stoeffler and Matt Gensel are also scheduled to compete in the men's 5,000-meter.
The Bulls have already rewritten the outdoor record book in the women's high jump, with three performances rising the program ranks. Zahra Amos set a new personal record of 1.78 meters at the Texas Relays to rank third in UB history, as Akuot Kuany posted a personal record of 1.74 meters to take sixth, joined by Adriana Ellsworth (1.71m) in eighth on the same day at Geneseo. The Bulls also rose the national leaderboards, ranking third among NCAA Division I on the outdoor event squad list. The Bulls' top four of Amos (1.78m), Kuany (1.74m), Ellsworth (1.71m) and Stella Kapp (1.63m) have a cumulative mark of 6.86m, trailing only UC Irvine (6.90m) and Nebraska (6.94m). The Bulls look to continue that momentum in the women's high jump this weekend at Bucknell on Saturday.
Rachel Hirschkind and Eliza Medearis are expected to compete in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday. The two graduate transfers joined the UB outdoor record book in their debut with the Bulls. Medearis completed the event with a time of 11:03.05 at the Richmond Invitational to take ninth on the all-time UB outdoor leaderboard in the season-opening meet. Two weeks later, Hirschkind posted a time of 10:55.85 to take fifth all-time in the outdoor ranks.
