TRENTON, NJ – The University at Buffalo wrestling team had six Bulls advance to day two of the Mid-American Conference hosted by Rider University at the Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton, NJ on Friday.
Marcus Petite won his first two matches to advance to the semifinals. He opened with a win over Cleveland State's JR Reed. He earned a dramatic victory in the quarterfinals as he won a sudden victory over Ohio's Jeremy Olszko. Similar to their final match of the regular season, Petite was awarded a stall point late in the third period and then got a takedown in overtime for the win.
Unfortunately, Petite dropped an 8-6 decision to top-seed Isaac Reed of Rider in the semifinals. Petite took control of the match early with a takedown but Reed's two third-period takedowns proved to be the difference.
Petite still has a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships with a third-place finish, meaning he will need to win two matches tomorrow.
Kaleb Burgess went 2-1 on the opening day and is also still alive for a spot at the national tournament. The redshirt-junior won his opening match with a first-period pin of Edinboro's Ryan Burgos. He dropped a tight 11-8 sudden victory in the quarterfinals, but advanced on the back side due to an injury forfeit.
He will need to win three matches tomorrow to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Max Elton also advanced to Saturday after going 2-1 on the opening day. He started off with a 4-2 decision over Tyeler Hagensen of Kent State. After losing to the top-seed in the quarterfinals, Elton rebounded with a 4-1 decision over Ohio's Ryan Meek.
Andy Lucinsky lost his first match of the day but bounced back in a big way, pinning Ohio's Kaden Jett in the third period of their match to advance to Saturday.
Hunter Shaut went 2-1 on the day to advance in his final MAC Championships appearance. Shaut opened with a 5-1 decision over SIUE's Bradley Gillum and then earned an 8-2 decision over NIU's Brett Smith to advance in the consolation bracket.
Lonnell Pabon dropped his first match of the day but gutted out a 2-1 decision over Northern Illinois' Sean Carroll in the consolation bracket to advance to Saturday.
Buffalo sits in ninth place after Friday's action.
The MAC Wrestling Championships conclude on Saturday. Action begins at 11:30 am.
