Bulls Host Rutgers in WNIT Great 8 on Sunday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (27-7, 13-5 MAC) welcomes the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to Alumni Arena for the WNIT Great 8 on Sunday at 2pm. This is the first time UB is hosting a Power 4 opponent since the Bulls took on Stanford at Alumni Arena on December 21, 2018.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ with Matt Mattia (play-by-play) and Jared Zeidman (color) announcing and can be heard on AM 1400 and the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is just the third overall meeting between Buffalo and Rutgers with the series split at one game apiece. The Bulls defeated the Scarlet Knights in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament in Storrs, Connecticut.
Buffalo is 27-7 overall after defeating Southern Indiana 76-64 in the Super 16 on. It was a balanced night offensively for the Bulls as eight players scored on the night, led by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 16 points to go with six assists. Seniors Jordyn Beaty and Terah Harness scored 13 points each and fellow senior Noelani Cornfield also scored in double figures with 12 points. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams narrowly missed out on double figures with nine points to go with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Bulls are led offensively by Watson who was named First-Team All-MAC and ranks in the top 20 nationally in total points (691), points per game (20.3), field goals made (266) and attempted (599). Lewis-Williams, a Second-Team All-MAC selection, is averaging 13.3 points per game while leading the team in rebounding (5.4 rpg) and Cornfield, who was named to the MAC All-Defensive Team, is also averaging in double figures at 10.8 ppg, while leading the team and ranking 17th nationally in assists per game (5.8) and 12th in total assists (190).
As a team, the Bulls led the league in scoring offense (73.6), scoring margin (+13.3), field goal percentage (.461), assists (16.6), and turnover margin (+7.3) while also ranking in the top three in the MAC in scoring defense (60.3), field goal defense (.384), 3FG defense (.283), steals per game (10.8) and free throw percentage (.762).
Rutgers enters Sunday's game with a 13-19 overall record after defeating College of Charleston 89-67 in the Super 16. The Scarlet Knights are led offensively by two-time All-Big Ten Second Team selection Destiny Adams who leads the team in scoring (17.7 ppg) and rebounding (9.8). She has scored in double-figures 28 times this season, highlighted by a triple-double performance in the win over the Cougars in which she recorded 18 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists, and has also notched 17 double-doubles, which ranks 13th nationally. Graduate student center Chyna Cornwell is second on the team in rebounding (7.6) and ranks 21st nationally in offensive boards per contest (3.9).
As a team the Scarlet Knights rank 39th nationally in offensive rebounds per game (13.7), 48th in blocks per game (4.2) and 58th in rebounds per game (39.1). They have been solid on the glass overall as they have outrebounded their opponents 16 times this season.
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to face the winner of Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne in the Fab 4. Date, time and location to be determined.
