Bulls Post Personal Records in Combined Events at Ashland Open

ASHLAND, OHIO – The University at Buffalo track and field team had select combined events athletes compete in the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon at the Ashland Open.
The Bulls had much success in the events, as senior Kevin Gabalski won the heptathlon with a personal record score of 5,155, ranking fifth all-time in UB indoor history. In the pentathlon, Isa van Puffelen earned third with a personal record score of 3,545, ranking ninth all-time in indoor history.
MEN'S HEPTATHLON
Gabalski's first-place finish in the field of 26 student-athletes and personal record came with five top-three finishes across the seven events, two event wins and two personal records. The senior began the meet on Friday with a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash and a time of 7.15 seconds. Gabalski then won the long jump with a new personal record mark of 6.81 meters and took third in the shot put with a mark of 12.06 meters. The senior closed out the competition on Friday by placing fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.85 meters, sitting in first place after day one.
Gabalski held his first-place spot through the final three events on Saturday. The senior won the 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 8.26, then finishing second in the pole vault with a new personal record of 4.21 meters, beating his previous best of 4.13 meters. Gabalski closed out day two by finishing 12th in the 1,000-meter run (2:57.60).
Gabalski held the fifth-ranked spot in UB indoor history for the heptathlon heading into the Ashland Open but beat his previous best (5,033) by over 100 (5,155). The senior trails the fourth-ranked score of 5,251 set by Steve Esler in 2003.
Brady Hughes also competed for the Bulls, finishing sixth in the heptathlon field of 26 with a new personal best score of 4,683. Hughes' score missed the 10th-ranked score in indoor program history by just 13 points (4,696) set by Michael Wolford in 2021.
The sophomore had four top-ten finishes across the seven events, including two second-place finishes and three personal records. Hughes began the heptathlon on Friday by taking sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.20. The sophomore then took 11th in the long jump with a new personal best of 6.26 meters, beating his previous record of 6.07 meters. Hughes closed Friday out by earning second in the shot put (12.22m) and in the high jump (1.91m). The sophomore's high jump mark was a personal record, breaking his previous best of 1.79 meters.
On Saturday the sophomore finished 10th in the 60-meter hurdles event, tying his record of 8.87 seconds. Hughes finished the heptathlon by taking 11th in the pole vault (3.71m) and 20th in the 1,000-meter (3:09.91).

WOMEN'S PENTATHLON
van Puffelen's third-place finish in the pentathlon field of 38 student-athletes and personal record score came with four top-ten finishes and two personal best performances. The freshman began the pentathlon on Friday taking seventh in the 60-meter hurdles event with a new personal record time of 9.24 seconds. van Puffelen then finished seventh in the high jump (1.59m) and 12th in the shot put (10.10m). The freshman closed out the wekeend by placing second in the 800-meter with a time of 2:22.65.
van Puffelen's score of 3,545 fell just shy of eighth place in the all-time UB indoor ranks, trailing Angela Foerster who set her record last season at MAC Indoor Championships (3,554).
Adriana Ellsworth competed too for the Bulls, finishing 15th of 38 student-athletes with a personal best score of 2,978. The sophomore began Friday by placing 22nd in the 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 10.00 seconds. Ellsworth then took third in the high jump (1.65), nearly missing her record mark of 1.70 meters that is tied for ninth all-time in UB indoor history. The sophomore placed 30th in the shot put with a new personal record of 7.58 meters and earned another personal best in the long jump (5.11m) to finish 11th. Ellsworth closed out the 800-meter run with a time of 2:46.08.

UP NEXT
The Bulls will split up between two meets next weekend. Student-athletes who qualify for the Boston University David Hemery Valentine Invitational, one of the nation's premier indoor meets, will compete on Friday, February 14th and Saturday, February 15th. Another group of Bulls will compete at the SPIRE Division I Games on Saturday, February 15th, as the team continues to prepare for the upcoming MAC Indoor Championships on February 28th and March 1st.
