OXFORD, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (22-4, 11-3 MAC) started hot and never let up as they battled to a 68-54 road win over Miami (OH) at Millett Hall on Saturday afternoon.
It was a balanced effort offensively as all nine Bulls who entered the game scored on the day, led by Chellia Watson who recorded her fifth career double-double with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Sitota Gines also scored in double figures with 12 points on a career-best four made three-pointers.
The RedHawks scored on their first possession of the game, but the Bulls responded with a 7-0 run, jump-started by a Paula Lopez triple from the top of the key, to give UB the lead at the first media timeout. Buffalo extended the run to 20-0 as Kirsten Lewis-Williams drove to the basket for a layup, Ariana Seawell powered up through contact for a layup plus the foul and Lopez came up with a steal and found Terah Harness for a fastbreak triple to force a Miami timeout and UB would lead 20-5 at the end of the first.
Gines gave the Bulls a spark to start the second quarter as she drilled a corner triple, but Miami answered with a 13-2 run to cut the lead to single digits. Gines ended the UB scoring drought with her second three of the quarter and then Lewis-Williams sliced through the defense for a layup off glass to put UB back up by 10. Gines continued to heat up from deep as she drained her third triple of the quarter and Watson scored in the paint on UB's next possession to give the Bulls a 35-25 lead at the half.
Senior forward Jordyn Beaty made her presence felt early in the third quarter as she skied up for an offensive rebound putback before Harness curled off a screen and drilled a three and Noelani Cornfield raced up the court for a fastbreak layup to give Buffalo a 45-32 lead at the media timeout. After Miami used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to seven, the teams traded trips to the charity stripe before Watson put an exclamation point on the court, going from coast-to-coast and laying it in at the buzzer to give UB a 51-42 lead at the end of the third.
After a slow start to the fourth for both teams, Watson converted on a pair of jumpers in the paint before Lewis-Williams hit Cornfield for a midrange jumper to put UB up by 15 but the hosts answered with a 5-0 run to pull within 10 at the media timeout. Gines continued to light it up from deep as she drained a three late in the shot clock before Watson went on a mini 4-0 run by herself to give the Bulls a 15-point lead with two minutes remaining and that would be enough to secure the victory.
Offensively, Buffalo scored 22 points in the paint and excelled at the free throw line where they went 19-of-22 on the day. Defensively, the Bulls forced 16 turnovers, scoring 22 points off those miscues, while adding 18 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will conclude the road trip at Toledo on Wednesday, February 26. Tipoff from Savage Arena is set for 1pm.
