BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo track and field program is competing this Saturday at Cornell's Marc Deneault Invitational, the team's last meet ahead of Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on February 28th and March 1st.
The Bulls are coming off another strong weekend split between Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invite and the SPIRE Indoor Games. Between the two meets the Bulls had seven new performances enter the all-time UB indoor record books.
With just one week until the conference championships in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the Bulls are using the final meet for many young athletes to gain indoor competition experience.
The sprinters on the women's roster are doubling back to build off their performance from the SPIRE Indoor Games. The Bulls took four of the nine spots in the 60-meter dash, with Hailey Martinez (5th, 7.91) Sophia Sampson (7th, 7.93), Shannon Schmieder (8th, 8.00) and Amber McDonald (9th, 8.01) all qualifying for the finals.
Sampson's preliminary round time of 7.91 was a new personal record in the event. The freshman also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.28, falling just shy of the UB all-time leaderboard for the event (25.11) and her personal record time of 25.20. Schmieder competed in the 200-meter too, taking fourth with a personal best time of 25.49.
Juliette Salazar is expected to compete in the women's 800-meter too following a strong performance at SPIRE. The sophomore finished second of 72 athletes in the women's 800-meter with a season-best time of 2:15.92. Salazar fell just shy of the all-time UB top ten (2:12.84) and her record 2:15.03.
Loretta White is scheduled to compete in the women's weight throw after setting a new personal record last Saturday. White's mark of 16.55 meters was a new personal best to finish fifth of 39 athletes at SPIRE.
On the men's side, Rylee VanAlstine looks to build off his personal record performance in the 400-meter. VanAlstine's time of 48.89 is tied to rank tenth all-time in UB indoor history with Gyasi Morris (2020). The freshman will also compete in the 200-meter.
Michael Parks is expected to compete in the 60-meter hurdles. Parks holds the fourth-ranked time in UB indoor history in the event (8.03) and the second-fastest time in the conference this season (8.04).
Aiden Walker looks to continue his improvement in the men's shot put. The junior placed fifth of 44 athletes with a new personal record mark of 15.75 meters at SPIRE. Walker is flirting with the all-time ranks, breaking his personal best twice this season while chasing the tenth-ranked mark (16.82m) in UB indoor history.
