TOLEDO, Ohio – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fell 79-46 at Toledo in their Mid-American Conference opener at Savage Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Redshirt freshman guard Aniya Rowe led the Bulls with eight points and fellow freshman Diann Jackson scored seven. Freshman forward Meg Lucas and Janyah Bohanon added six points and five rebounds each.
Freshman Deana Thompson drained a corner triple on UB's second possession of the game, but the hosts answered with a 7-0 run. Later, Lucas drove by her defender for a layup off glass and Bohanon knocked down a midrange jumper to pull UB within one at the first media timeout. Toledo then rattled off an 8-0 run before Rowe scored on back-to-back possessions to pull UB within five, but the Rockets answered with a three to take a 19-13 lead at the end of the first.
Toledo blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulls 22-6, to take a 41-19 lead at the half. The Rockets then carried that momentum into the third quarter, using a 10-4 run to force another UB timeout at the 6:45 mark and they would extend their lead to 37 at the end of the third.
Junior Paula Lopez hit Jackson on a beautiful high-low play for a layup and Thompson came up with a steal and scored to give the Bulls a spark early in the fourth quarter. Later, Lopez got a layup off glass and Bohanon knocked down a midrange jumper before Jackson went to work again in the paint, scoring a tough layup, before finding Anaya Coleman for a triple on the wing in the final minute.
Toledo maintained a 44-26 advantage in the paint while also winning the battle on the glass. Buffalo scored 26 of their points in the paint and forced 15 points but were unable to capitalize, scoring just eight points off Toledo's turnovers.
Up next, Buffalo will travel to Kalamazoo for a clash with the Western Michigan Broncos on Saturday, January 3 at 1pm.
