BAYAMON, PUERTO RICO – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team fought to the end but came up one possession short as they fell to Longwood 68-64 in the first game of the Puerto Rico Clasico at Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez on Thursday afternoon.
Senior guard Anaya Coleman and junior guard Janyah Bohanon led the Bulls in scoring with 13 points each. Freshmen Meg Lucas and Diann Jackson were a menace on the glass as the former tied a career-high with 14 rebounds and the latter set a new career-high with 12 boards to go with a career-best eight points.
After trailing 10-3 at the first media timeout, Lucas finished for a pair of layups to pull UB within seven, but the Lancers answered with a 5-0 run to take a 10-point lead at the end of the first.
Freshman Ella Corry knocked down a midrange jumper on UB's first possession of the second quarter before Jackson powered up for a tough layup through contact and Coleman sliced to the rim for a layup to cap a 6-0 run that cut the lead to four and forced a Longwood timeout at the 7:23 mark. The Bulls extended their run to 10 as Aniya Rowe finished a second chance layup off glass and Bohanon scored to cut the lead to two midway through the quarter. Later, Paula Lopez drained a triple on the wing to give UB their first lead of the game, 26-25, before Jackson went to work, scoring in the paint on back-to-back possessions, to put UB up by five and they would maintain a 31-30 lead at the half.
Longwood opened the third quarter on a 10-4 run to take a five-point lead at the media timeout. Bohanon got a bucket to go plus the foul and then Gabby McDuffie drilled a corner triple on UB's next possession to cut the lead to four at the 3:59 mark. Later, Rowe sliced to the bucket for a layup and then Bohanon beat the buzzer with a pull up jumper as the Bulls cut the lead to 51-47 at the end of the third.
The Lancers used a 6-2 run to take an eight-point lead and force a UB timeout at the 7:36 mark. The Bulls clawed back at the free throw line before Coleman drilled a step-back triple on the wing to cut the lead to four and force a Longwood timeout at the 3:03 mark. In the final minute, Bohanon came up with a steal and scored and then Coleman banked home a second chance three to cut the lead to one with 18 seconds remaining, but UB was unable to execute on their last possession, and the Lancers sealed the game at the charity stripe.
The Bulls dominated the glass, outrebounding Longwood 43-31, including 22 offensive rebounds which they turned into 16 second chance points. Buffalo found success inside once again, scoring 38 points in the paint, while also scoring 18 fastbreak points but turnovers plagued Buffalo as the Lancers scored 23 points off UB miscues.
Up next, Buffalo will take on Hampton in the final game of the tournament on Saturday at 9am (EST).
