11/18/2025 10:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BUFFALO, N.Y. – In a game that had 12 ties and 12 lead changes, the University at Buffalo men's basketball team (5-0, 0-0 MAC) came out victorious over the visiting Vermont Catamounts (4-1, 0-0 America East) at Alumni Arena on Tuesday evening, 94-90. This is just the second time in their Division I era that Buffalo has started the season 5-0, the first came in 2018-19.
Buffalo's 94 points were the most points scored against a non-conference Division I opponent since Nov. 24, 2021, when they scored 106 against Illinois State at the Cancun Challenge.
In Monday evening's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll, the Bulls saw themselves 24th as Vermont was 18th.
The Bulls' leader in scoring was Daniel Freitag as he scored a career-high 33 points including knocking in four triples, a career high. Angelo Brizzi also scored a career-high 19 points as he was 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Ryan Sabol rounded out the Bulls in double figures as he added 13. Sabol led the team with five assists.
The Bulls continued to make trips to the free throw line as they attempted 37 free throws, the second-most on the season. It was a key difference as the Bulls went 31-for-37 to Vermont's 18-for-22.
It was a tale of two halves for the Bulls on offense. The Bulls struggled to find a rhythm from the floor compared to the Catamounts. Buffalo shot 39.3% from the floor in the first half as Vermont shot 59.3%. The Bulls were just 4-of-15 from three-point range as the Catamounts were 6-for-13. UB scored the first basket of the night as Freitag buried a three. Vermont's largest run of the evening came early as a 9-0 run put them ahead, 9-3, just a few minutes into the contest. An 11-0 run by the Bulls gave them a 16-11 lead with 12 minutes to go in the first half. Slowly, Vermont came back as they led at the half, 43-40. The Catamounts outscored the Bulls, 32-24 to end the half.
Efficiency was key in the second half for the Bulls. In the half, they scored on 22 of their 33 possessions resulting in 54 second half points and a field goal percentage of .640. The 54 points scored marked a season-high in either half by the Bulls. Vermont's lead doubled in their first possession to make it 46-40, but Buffalo tied the game at 49 after Brizzi drove to the basket making a layup and drawing the foul. The Catamounts maintained a 6-point lead two more times, but their final lead came at 63-62 with 11:07 to go. During that time, the Bulls chipped away as a 18-4 run put them in front, 73-65. The game tightened with very little room for error as Buffalo's lead as many as 9 points, was only a single point with under four minutes remaining. The Bulls iced the game as in the final two minutes, they went 6-of-7 from the free throw line as they maintained a two-possession lead.
The Bulls continue to force turnovers, as they have now forced 10+ turnovers in every game this season. This translated to the Bulls outscoring the Catamounts in points off of turnovers, 16-8.
