BURLINGTON, VT – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team scored 26 fourth quarter points, but the rally came up short as the Bulls fell to Vermont 73-55 at Patrick Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior guard Paula Lopez led the Bulls offensively as she recorded a career-high 24 points, including 4-of-9 shooting from behind the arc. Freshman forward Meg Lucas also shined on the day as she scored in double figures for the first time in her young UB career, narrowly missing out on a double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds.
Vermont opened the game on an 8-0 run to force an early UB timeout at the 6:09 mark. Lucas broke the UB scoring drought with an offensive rebound putback and then later, Lopez got a baseline floater to drop before finding Lucas on the block with a lob pass for a layup to pull UB within six, but the hosts ended the quarter on a 6-2 run to take an 18-8 lead at the end of the first.
Senior Ally Carman gave the Bulls a spark to start the second quarter as she got position for a layup through contact before coming up with a big block at the end of the shot clock that led to a Lopez transition triple. Lopez stayed in attack mode as she converted on a pull up jumper before driving in for another layup to pull UB within three, but the hosts answered with a bucket of their own at the other end to take a 22-17 lead at the media timeout. Lucas put her defender on skates as she spun to the basket for a layup off glass to pull UB within three, but the Catamounts answered with an 8-0 run to take a double-digit lead at the half.
Vermont opened the third quarter on a 12-4 run to take a 19-point lead at the media timeout. The Buffalo offense continued to struggle to find rhythm offensively before Lopez got a hook shot in the paint to drop and Thompson sliced to the basket for a layup off glass, but the hosts scored at the buzzer to take a 53-29 lead at the end of the third.
Lopez hit Lucas on the block with a beautiful pass on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter and then later, Lopez drained a three from the wing and Janyah Bohanon stopped and popped for a jumper in the paint. Amber Howard skied up for an offensive rebound putback and then after the media timeout, the Bulls continued to heat up from deep as Lopez and Lucas connected on a pair of triples before the latter blew by her defender and finished off glass to pull UB within 16 with 2:15 remaining. The Bulls continued to attack as Lopez sliced to the basket for a layup and then drained her fourth triple of the game to pull UB within 11 but that would be as close as they would get.
Buffalo found success inside, scoring 34 points in the paint while also forcing the Catamounts into 17 turnovers, which they turned into 18 points, but UB was plagued by costly mistakes themselves on offense as they committed 18 turnovers and Vermont capitalized, scoring 22 points off those miscues.
Up next, Buffalo will return to the friendly confines of Alumni Arena as they host Atlantic 10 foe Fordham on Alumni Day, where the program will honor the 10th anniversary of Buffalo's first Mid-American Conference championship.
