BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team outscored Bowling Green 25-10 in the fourth quarter to rally to a 70-60 win over the Falcons at the Stroh Center on Wednesday night.
Chellia Watson led the Bulls offensively with a game-high 24 points and Noelani Cornfield also scored in double figures with 13 points while Kirsten Lewis-Williams stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
For the second straight game the Bulls found themselves in an early hole as the Falcons opened the game on a 13-0 run and made seven straight field goals. Buffalo would chip away as Ariana Seawell scored on back-to-back possessions before Watson converted a layup plus the foul to cut the lead to single digits at the first media timeout, but the Falcons maintained a 22-13 lead at the end of the first.
Lewis-Williams went into attack mode as she made four straight at the charity stripe to cut the lead to five early in the second quarter but the hosts answered with a pair of threes to spark a 7-0 run and go back up by double digits. UB clawed back as Watson drilled a long triple from the wing and Lewis-Williams sliced to the basket for a tough finish through contact to cut the lead to eight and force a BGSU timeout at the 4:33 mark. Buffalo extended the run to 9-0 on a beautiful transition execution as Cornfield found Sitota Gines for a fastbreak layup but the Falcons scored on their final possession of the quarter to take a 34-28 lead at the half.
The Bulls opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run, but the Falcons answered with threes on two straight possessions and the UB deficit would remain six at the media timeout. The teams traded stops before Lewis-Williams and Gines executed another beautiful fastbreak play and later, Terah Harness knocked down a transition triple before Watson got a floater in the paint to drop to pull UB within five at the end of the third.
Harness finished off glass for two on UB's first possession of the fourth quarter before Watson scored on a jumper and then later, Paula Lopez hit Cornfield for a fastbreak layup to give Buffalo its first lead of the game, 53-52 and force a BGSU timeout. Harness extended the UB run to 8-0 on a tough take and finish off glass for a layup to put UB up 55-52 at the final media timeout. Buffalo continued to stay aggressive as they made four free throws and then Watson delivered on a heat-check mid-range jumper to put UB up by eight with 2:28 to go and that was more than enough to secure the victory.
Buffalo dominated in the paint once again, outscoring the Falcons 40-24 inside, while also turning defense into offense, forcing 14 turnovers which they turned into 14 points and adding 15 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will return home to host Ball State on Native American Heritage Day at Alumni Arena on Saturday at 2pm.
