BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (13-2, 2-2 MAC) fell to Ball State 78-56 at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by Chellia Watson who stuffed the stat sheet, scoring a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored 17 points while notching six rebounds and three steals and Noelani Cornfield added 10 points.
The Cardinals started the game on an 8-0 run before Cornfield and Lewis-Williams scored in transition to cut the lead in half, but the visitors answered with a three to go up 11-4 at the first media timeout. Ball State continued to heat up from deep as they hit threes on two straight possessions to take a 22-14 lead at the end of the first.
Senior Terah Harness hit a triple on UB's first possession of the second quarter to cut the lead to five, but Ball State answered with a 6-0 run to go up 30-19 lead at the media timeout. Watson found Ariana Seawell in the paint for a layup and then got out in transition, converting a fastbreak mid-range jumper plus the foul to cut the lead to 13 but the visitors closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 43-25 lead at the half.
Buffalo showed fight early in the third as they used a 10-2 run on a pair of Cornfield buckets and four straight points from Watson to pull within 15 at the media timeout. The Bulls continued to chip away as Watson drilled a triple and later, UB used a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of tough buckets by Cornfield and Watson, to pull within 10 but the Cardinals scored at the buzzer to maintain a 57-45 lead at the end of the third.
After a slow start to the fourth quarter for both teams, Ball State rattled off an 11-0 run in just over four minutes to take a 72-47 lead at the final media timeout and the Bulls would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Cardinals controlled the glass, outrebounding Buffalo 47-26, including 15 offensive rebounds, which they turned into 12 second chance points and added 19 points of bench production. UB did force 16 Ball State turnovers and scored 16 points off those miscues, while adding 26 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will head back on the road as they travel to Ypsilanti for a contest at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, January 15 at 6:30pm.
