BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (12-20, 4-7 MAC) fell to the Ball State Cardinals (17-21, 4-8 MAC) in Sunday's rubber band match, 7-1.
The Bulls had an unconventional one, two, three inning as the three-hole hitter singled to right field, but Karina Pulu threw her out at second as she tried to steal the base. The Bulls threatened in the bottom of the first with runners on first and second and no outs, but the Cardinals got out of the jam. Alexis Lucyshyn drilled a line drive to shortstop which was bobbled and nearly dropped, but were able turn a double play.
Buffalo struck first off a double steal in the second inning. Reagan Terwilliger stole second base which forced the throw down which allowed Abbey Nagel to go home. The comeback throw was too late as the Bulls took a 1-0 lead.
Ball State took advantage of a bases loaded fifth inning as they scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. The Bulls were unable to answer as Terwilliger was stranded on second base after a single to left and a stolen base.
The Cardinals extended their lead in the sixth inning after a lead-off double and sacrifice bunt, the opposition drove in their third run on a double to right. With the Bulls up to the plate, Tianna Williams led the inning off with a single to right. After two straight putouts, Nagel singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. UB didn't capitalize in the situation as the Cardinals led, 3-1, after six.
In the seventh inning, Ball State added four insurance runs to their lead to make it 7-1. The Bulls couldn't muster a rally together as the score stood after the seventh.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday at Central Michigan for a three-game series against the Chippewas.
