
Bulls Set New Personal Records at East Coast Relays

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Members of the University at Buffalo Track and Field team competed in the East Coast Relays on the campus of North Florida this past weekend. The Bulls had a strong weekend against national competition, with multiple new personal best performances.
Tal Hamel headlined the weekend for the Bulls, moving up the UB all-time outdoor ranks in two more events this season. On Friday, Hamel beat his season best time (21.09) in the men's 200 meter at the East Coast Relays with a time of 21.02. The junior's new personal best time ranks second in men's outdoor history. Then on Saturday, Hamel completed the men's 400 meter at the East Coast Relays in 47.19, a new personal best for the junior that ranks fourth in UB outdoor history. Hamel's time ranks third in the Mid-American Conference.
Aleksandra Szulska joined the all-time outdoor school leaderboard in yet another event this weekend. The freshman who holds the 5,000 meter school record competed in the 1,500 meter run this time, setting a new personal best time of 4:30.20. The freshmen's performance ranks seventh in UB outdoor history.
The Bulls had success in throwing events per usual. Jonathan Surdej placed second in the men's shot put with a throw of 17.79 meters. Surdej's mark was a new season best. Caleb Nickens finished fifth in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 59.12 meters. Nickens' throw was a meter shy of his season best mark. Quinn Smith finished 9th of 22 throwers in the men's discus throw, with a mark of 47.88 meters. Smith's throw was three meters shy of his season record.
On the women's side of throwing, Jenna Reid had a new personal best mark in the javelin throw. Reid's throw of of 44.38 meters ranks third all-time in UB outdoor history. The graduate student finished seventh of 35 throwers. Reid's mark also ranks atop the conference in the event this season. Scilla Benussi set a season best in the javelin throw, with a throw of 39.23 meters, ranking third in the MAC this season. In the women's hammer throw, Imahni Sinclair finished sixth with a mark of 55.07 meters. The senior was three-tenths of a meter shy of her season record.
Brian Murphy placed sixth in the men's pole vault with a mark of 4.67 meters. Murphy's season best mark is 4.80 meters, set at the Raleigh Relays earlier this outdoor season.
Zahra Amos tied her personal best mark of 1.75 meters in the women's high jump which ranks fourth in UB outdoor history. The junior placed second in a field 20 student-athletes.
Kara Moran earned a personal best mark in the women's triple jump of 11.69 meters. Moran's mark ranks 11th in the MAC this season.
Jermaine Ewers finished 45th of 107 runners in the men's 100 meter dash with a time of 10.62. Ewers' time was a hundredth of a second shy of his season best, set earlier this season at the Texas Relays. Angela Forster ran a personal record time in the women's 200 meter dash (26.03). Gemma Galligani later ran a personal best in the 400 meter hurdles (1:04.21), beating her previous best set at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic. The freshman ranks atop Buffalo's female roster in the event.
