
Bulls Turn Heads Against National Competition At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – Members of the University at Buffalo Track & Field men's distance team competed in the Penn Relays this weekend, one of the nation's premiere outdoor meets. Going against the strong field of competition, the Bulls made their mark on the weekend, winning a relay event.
The meet on Thursday night with the 5,000 meter run, an event the Buffalo men have had success with. School record holder Ryan Buzby completed the run in 14:11.33, finishing 17th of 70 in a field of national competition. Alex Hislop also ran a strong race for Buffalo, ending the event with a time of 14:30.66. Hislop's time was five seconds shy of his personal best time (14:25.85), which ranks seventh all-time in UB outdoor history.
The highlight of the weekend came on Friday afternoon for the Bulls, when Buzby, Johann Matzal, Noah Brightman and Fernando Sanchez won the college men's distance medley relay with a time of 9:43.14. The relay time was less than eight seconds shy of the outdoor school record (9:35.72), set in 2017.
On the final day of competition, the Buffalo men competed in the 4x800 relay. The team of Matzal, Sanchez, Evan Hilbert and Gabe Watson placed ninth of 17 teams with a time of 7:35.54. Buffalo beat out regional competition in Albany, Wagner, Fordham and Maryland.
