BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo Swimming and Diving team is competing in the Mid-American Conference Championships this week in Athens, Ohio. The championships begin on Wednesday morning at 11am, running through Saturday night where the MAC Champion will be crowned.
The Bulls are looking to win their second MAC Championship in program history this week. Buffalo has finished inside the top three in every season since 2016, winning the program's title in 2021. The Bulls have had three second place finishes over the past four seasons.
Buffalo is 3-4 in head-to-head matchups this season and 2-3 against MAC opponents. In the Bulls first MAC meet of the season, Ball State escaped with the win by a slim margin, defeating Buffalo 155-145. The meet came down to the final event, with the Cardinals taking the winning points by just a second and a half. The Bulls lost their next meet to Miami of Ohio but came back stronger following the team's training trip. To start the new year, Buffalo bounced back with a win against Duquesne at home. The Bulls then closed out the regular season with a tri-meet and two wins over Bowling Green and Toledo, defeating the Falcons 217.5-135.5 and the Rockets 195-158.
In the pool this season Buffalo is led by a mix of upper and lower classmen. This dynamic was on display at the Princeton Invitational, a multi-day meet with competition from across the nation such as Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia, North Carolina, George Washington and the host school of Princeton.
Senior Mia Naccarella set a new school record for the Bulls this season at the invitational, completing the preliminary round of the 100 yard backstroke in 53.25. Naccarella went on to finish third in the finals, one of her two top ten finishes against the field of national competition. Sophomore Abigail Malmstrom has also been strong in the backstroke events for Buffalo, finishing eighth in the finals of the 200 yard backstroke at the invitational.
Buffalo was competitive against national competition in the butterfly events too. The Bulls had two top ten finishers in both the 100 yard and the 200 yard butterfly, as graduate student Clarice Fisher took fifth in the 100 (53.96) and sixth in the 200 (2:00.87). Sophomore Nicole Aguilar took tenth in the 100 (54.47) and in the 200 (2:02.67).
In the breaststroke events this season Buffalo yet again has a combination of upper and lower classmen. Kasey Keaney has led the Bulls throughout the season, finishing first for the team in eleven breaststroke events this season. Freshman Grace Rider has followed closely behind, finishing first for Buffalo in two events and second in four events this season.
The Bulls have had contributions from a variety of swimmers in the freestyle events. Naccarella has been a top finisher for the Bulls in freestyle events, taking first place in both the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle against Duquesne and Marshall. Junior Alicia Wood has been a mainstay among Buffalo's top finishers too, finishing first for the team twice and second seven times this season. Sophomore Elise McCaul has placed first for the Bulls twice this season and second once.
In the distance freestyle events, senior Marij van der Mast and sophomore Karen Austin have been among the Bulls top finishers. Against the undefeated Ohio Bobcats, van der Mast took first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:58.46. Two weeks later, the senior won the 500 freestyle again versus Bowling Green and Toledo with a time of 5:07.43. Austin took third place in the 1000 yard freestyle against Duquesne and Marshall, earning points for Buffalo.
The Bulls have dominated in the diving well throughout the season, taking first place in 12 of the 17 diving competitions this season. In a field of 44 divers at the Princeton Invitational, the Bulls had five of the top 12 spots. The following day Buffalo had three of the top six finishers in a field of 21 divers. At the UB Diving Invite the Bulls had four of the top five finishers in the 1 meter diving finals, followed by taking five of the top 12 spots in the 3 meter finals. Buffalo has had seven of the top eight finishers in three diving events this season.
Graduate student Victoria Franz has led the way in the diving well this season, earning five MAC Diver of the Week awards this season. The junior has earned 16 podium finishes this season, taking first place twice, second place ten times and third place five times.
