KENT, Ohio – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (4-24 MAC) lost to the Kent State Golden Flashes (14-14, 7-8 MAC) for their final road contest of the 2023-24 campaign, 76-64.
Isaiah Adams led the Bulls with 19 points, as he finished 3-for-4 from three-point range. Jonnivius Smith recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 10 points which matched his rebound total. He became the first Bull to have back-to-back double-double performances since Josh Mballa did so in February and March of 2022.
Bryson Wilson scored a career-high eight points as he knocked down all four of his free throw attempts. Fellow freshman Ryan Sabol splashed in a pair of three on the night. Returning to the floor after missing the last six games was Anquan Boldin Jr. In his 9:23 played, he finished with two rebounds and one block.
After taking a 2-0 lead, the Golden Flashes couldn't stop the Bulls on offense. Buffalo had their largest lead at 11-5 from a Sy Chatman jumper outside the paint at the 14:39 mark. After tying the game at 27 with 4:40 left off a Smith layup, the Bulls went scoreless the rest of the half. Kent State closed the half on a 12-0 run to lead 39-27 headed into the locker room. Buffalo led for 9:02 in the half compared to Kent State's 7:35. Kent State's Jalen Sullinger went 4-for-6 from three in the half and had 16 points after just 20 minutes.
The 12-point halftime deficit was too much to conquer as Kent State's lead ballooned to as much as 23. Buffalo battled as they were able to cut the Golden Flashes' lead to 10, but their 18 turnovers cost them. Kent State outscored the Bulls, 22-8 in points off turnovers. Sullinger couldn't be stopped as it seemed every shot went in as he finished with 30 points and 8-for-13 from three-point range.
The Bulls are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Toledo as they'll close the season with a three-game home stand.
