BUFFALO, NY – For the second straight game, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team led from start to finish as they put forth another dominant effort in a 74-51 win over Binghamton on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena.
With the victory, the Bulls improve to 8-0 on the season, their best start since 2016.
Three Bulls scored in double figures on the night, led by Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 26 points to go with four rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Terah Harness scored in double figures for the fourth straight game with 12 points and sophomore Alexis Davis recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bulls got off to a hot start as Lewis-Williams found Watson and Davis for fastbreak layups on UB's first two possessions of the game and then Watson continued to heat up as she rattled off 10 points in the opening five minutes to put UB up 15-2 at the first media timeout. Buffalo continued to pour it on as Harness drilled a triple from the wing and Seawell hit Watson with a high-low pass for a layup to put UB up 20-6 at the end of the first.
It was a defensive battle to start the second quarter as the Bulls maintained a 25-10 lead at the media timeout. The Bearcats would cut the lead to 10 with just under four minutes remaining before Noelani Cornfield found Watson for a layup and then Watson raced up court and blew by her defender for a layup off glass plus the foul. Later, Cornfield dished up another dime, this time to Harness for a corner three, and the Bulls would lead 33-21 at the half.
The Bulls executed a set beautifully as Watson found Lewis-Williams for a layup on UB's first possession of the third quarter, before Harness hit Watson and Lopez for a pair of layups before spotting up for a deep triple at the top of the key to put UB up 42-27 at the 6:06 mark. Binghamton then scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 11 at the media timeout. Harness got going again as she scored on two straight trips up the floor and then came up with a steal and hit Watson for a fastbreak layup to give the Bulls a 50-33 lead and force a Binghamton timeout at the 2:44 mark. Buffalo continued to attack as Ariana Seawell powered up for a layup plus the foul and then Davis scored a tough bucket through contact and UB would lead 59-40 at the end of the third.
The Bulls remained in attack mode to start the fourth quarter as they rattled off a 6-0 run, capped by a pair of layups by Cornfield, to put UB up 65-43 and force a Binghamton timeout at the 7:51 mark. The Bulls would then use one last run, capped by a layup through traffic from Seawell and a steal and score by Mallory Daly, to seal the victory.
Buffalo found success inside as they held a 52-34 advantage in the paint while also winning the battle on the glass. The Bulls continue to turn defense into offense as they forced 22 turnovers and capitalized, scoring 19 points off those miscues while also adding 18 points in transition.
Up next, Buffalo will have a 10-day break for finals week before hosting Stony Brook on Saturday, December 14 at 2pm.
