BUFFALO, NY – In a battle between the two flagship institutions in the State of New York, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team came out on top in a 72-55 win over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena.
With the victory, the Bulls improve to 9-0 on the season, their best start since 2016.
Three Bulls scored in double figures, led by Chellia Watson who scored 14 points, including the 1,500th point of her career, and Alexis Davis who was one rebound shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Fifth year Noelani Cornfield also scored in double figures with 13 points to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Bulls opened the game on a 9-0 run as Watson got a floater in the lane to drop on UB's first possession for her milestone bucket, Cornfield drilled a three on the wing and Davis powered up for an offensive rebound putback, to force an early Stony Brook timeout at the 6:18 mark. The Seawolves then heated up from beyond the arc, knocking down a trio of triples, to pull within four at the end of the first.
Stony Brook scored on their first two possessions of the second quarter to pull within one, and then later hit another three to tie the game at 21 at the media timeout. Both teams hit a lull before Terah Harness found Davis on the block for a layup and then Davis returned the favor, hitting Harness in the corner for a three at the buzzer to give Buffalo a 32-26 lead at the half.
Buffalo opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run, capped by a tough layup by Davis and a steal and score from Cornfield, to put UB up 38-26 and force an early Stony Brook timeout. Cornfield continued to attack as she converted an acrobatic layup off glass and then Watson pushed the pace in transition and hit Harness who drilled the fastbreak triple, to put UB up 44-28 at the media timeout. The Seawolves answered with an 8-0 run to pull within single digits at the 2:40 mark before Mallory Daly hit Watson for a transition layup, Davis powered up for an offensive rebound layup and Watson got a runner in the lane to drop at the buzzer to give the Bulls a 50-36 lead at the end of the third.
The teams traded baskets and stops for the early part of the fourth quarter before the Bulls got to the free throw line in a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 65-43, at the 4:06 mark and they never looked back, cruising to victory.
Buffalo dominated inside, owning a 44-12 advantage in the paint, while winning the battle on the glass, including 20 offensive rebounds which they turned into 22 second chance points. UB also continued to rack up the points off turnovers, scoring 19 points off 19 SBU miscues and adding 16 fastbreak points.
Up next, Buffalo will remain home to take on Vermont on Thursday, December 14 in a 1pm contest at Alumni Arena.
