Bulls to Face Notre Dame for First Time in Program History on Monday Evening

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 MAC) will travel to South Bend, Ind. for their first ever meeting against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0, 0-0 ACC) on Monday evening. The game will be streamed on ACCNX/ESPN+ at 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bulls are coming an 87-78 win over Fredonia on Friday evening. In the win, Tyson Dunn recorded the program's fourth triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. With the win, the Bulls improve to 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 2018-19 season when they defeated St. Francis (Pa.) and #13 West Virginia.
Dunn joins Shannon Evans II (12/30/14 at Binghamton), CJ Massinburg (12/5/18 vs. Le Moyne) and Jayvon Graves (3/2/21 at Akron) as the only Bulls to record a triple-double. Dunn's 14 assists are tied for fifth in program history for most assists in a single game. The last Bull to record 14 assists was Byron Mulkey on March 4, 2007, against the Ohio Bobcats. Dunn also led the team with 4 steals.
To go with Dunn's performance, both sophomores Anquan Boldin Jr. and Ryan Sabol had career nights. Boldin set a new career-high in points scored with 22, passing his previous best of 19 that came against Western Kentucky (12/9/23). In the game, he knocked down 9 field goals while tallying 4 assists. Sabol scored a career-high 28 points on 8 field goals. This included tying his career-high 7 made three-pointers from Feb. 6th at Bowling Green, good for 10th in program history for most made threes in a single game. He also went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Freshman Ben Michaels went 5-for-8 from the floor as he finished with another 13-point performance.
The Bulls finished with 10 three-pointers on the night. The last time they finished with 10+ threes in back-to-back games came in the 2021-22 season at Bowling Green (2/15/22) and at Eastern Michigan (2/17/22) when they finished with 11 in each game.
ABOUT THE SERIES
This will mark the first ever meeting between Buffalo and Notre Dame. Historically, the Bulls are 8-53 (.131) against teams from the ACC. Their last win against an ACC foe came on Dec. 18, 2018, when the #14 Bulls defeated the Syracuse Orange on the road, 71-59. The Bulls' last game against a team from the ACC was on Dec. 15, 2020, at Syracuse. The Orange won in overtime, 107-96. In total, they have beaten Syracuse six times along with Pitt and Miami (Fla.) once each.
The only other men's program in UB history to play Notre Dame was the men's soccer team where they eventually defeated the nationally ranked Fighting Irish on the road, 3-2, on Sept. 13, 1997.
THE BULL-ETIN BOARD
Tyson Dunn is just one of 12 players in all of Division I basketball to record two double-doubles on the season. He's also the only player in the NCAA to record a triple-double thus far. His 12.0 assists per game is good for third in college hoops. Dunn's 24 total assists is second in the country behind Pacific's Lamar Washington's 25 assists.
Ryan Sabol's 4.50 three-pointers per game is 32nd in the nation. His nine made threes ranks 14th in the nation and first in the Mid-American Conference.
The Bulls are 4-1 in games played on Nov. 11th in the program's history. The Bulls fell to the South Alabama Jaguars last season on this date, 70-56. It'll mark the first road game on this date. All of Buffalo's wins on Nov. 11th have come against Catholic institutions:
• 2011 vs. Saint Peter's, 72-65
• 2016 vs. Niagara, 76-66
• 2017 vs. Canisius, 80-75
• 2019 vs. Nazareth, 109-72
The Bulls will hit the road to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind. This will be the first of two games they'll play in Indiana as they'll face the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 22 in Muncie.
In back-to-back games, the Bulls will play schools they have never played in the program's history. On Monday, Nov. 11, they'll play at Notre Dame followed by the Bryant Bulldogs for a home contest on Thursday, Nov. 14.
Since their return to Division I in 1991, Buffalo has only started 2-0 seven times.
