Bulls Sweep Golden Flashes in Friday Night MACtion

BUFFALO, N.Y. β The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (6-10, 2-1 MAC) swept the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-12, 0-3 MAC) on Friday evening (25-6, 25-16, 25-23). The Bulls have now swept the Golden Flashes in four of the last five meetings.

The Bulls took care of business against Kent State as they outhit them, .393 to .030. On the night, the Bulls were limited to just nine attack errors. Manoela Forlin had a match-high 12 kills as Katrin Trebichavska added 11. Reese Collins saw her first collegiate action on Friday and finished with three kills and a solo block.

A highlight of the evening was Mandy Leigh's performance. She totaled 32 assists, but for her career, she surpassed 4,000 assists. The senior setter became the second Bull in program history to reach this milestone.

Trebichavska totaled six aces on the night which moved her to ninth in program history with 155 career aces. She passed Candi Simms (1993-96, 151) and Lindsay Matikosh (2000-03, 154). As a team they had 12 aces, a three-set season high.

Buffalo stormed out of the gate in the first set. Kent State was forced to call a timeout trailing 9-2. Buffalo continued to dominate the set as they closed the set on an 8-0 run as they limited the Golden Flashes to just six points and a -.056 hitting percentage.

At the second set media timeout, the Bulls led 15-8 after going on a 6-0 run. The Golden Flashes tightened the set after making it 15-11 out of the timeout. The momentum didn't shift as Buffalo went on to win the set, 25-16.

The Bulls hadn't trailed in the match until the third set after Kent State took a 2-1 lead. Buffalo then went on to lead 8-3 after terrific serves from Forlin. The Golden Flashes stopped the Bulls in their tracks as they rattled off an 8-0 run to lead 11-8 and force a Bulls' timeout. Shortly after the timeout, Trebichavska was on fire from the service line. She helped the Bulls to a 6-0 run with four service aces to retake a 15-12 lead. It was all Buffalo the rest of the way as they won, 25-23.

"We played about as clean of a first set as you can imagine to really set the tone for the night," stated Head Coach Scott Smith. "We played confidently all night long and despite some late errors in the third set were able to secure the sweep. I am really proud of how the team is playing and really balancing things out offensively. We will be prepared for tomorrow's match and hope to have repeat performances in some areas and improve upon some others as well."
