Bulls To Compete Against Nationally and Regionally Ranked Programs at Paul Short Invite
10/4/2024 9:26:00 AM | Cross Country
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo cross country team is set to compete in Lehigh University's Paul Short Invitational for the second year in a row, one of the Northeast's premiere cross country meets.
In 2023, the Paul Short Invite hosted over 40 teams on both the men's and women's sides. The Buffalo men posted a top-20 finish in the field of 43 teams, competing against nationally and regionally ranked programs.
This fall marks the 50th annual Paul Short Invite. This year, over 7,000 total athletes will compete, representing over 600 different high schools and colleges over 16 races. The Buffalo runners are set to compete in the collegiate gold races, which feature nationally and regionally ranked programs from all over the country.
The large fields of competition are also a learning experience for the Bulls. At last year's Paul Short Invite, men's distance coach Todd Witzleben cited the challenges that come with the number of competitors.
"The congestion of the field through the course caused the men to be slow through the first mile," said Witzleben. They had to work extremely hard to move up. The team is fit, we just need to execute our race plan better as we move forward to championship races."
The Buffalo men will compete in the 8k collegiate gold race at 11 am, with the women racing in the 6k collegiate brown course at 2:30 pm. The Bulls will have several underclassmen compete in the men's and women's open races before the collegiate gold competitions, utilizing those races to prepare for Mid-American Conference Championships.
