BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (11-11, 7-2 MAC) will host the Akron Zips (8-13, 4-5 MAC) on Tuesday evening for mid-week #MACtion. This will be the second meeting between the Bulls and Zips on the season as the Bulls were victorious on Oct. 8 at Akron, 3-1.
The all-time series against Akron has been in favor of the Zips as they lead the series, 31-26, but the Bulls are winners of six straight and have swept the opposition in four of the last five matches. Head Coach Scott Smith is 10-2 against Akron in his tenure at Buffalo and has swept Akron in six of his 10 wins.
The Zips were picked ninth in the MAC Preseason Coaches' Poll with 48 points. Last season they finished with a 13-16 overall record. Currently, Akron sits at 4-5 and is in ninth in the MAC standings.
The Bulls are coming off a weekend split against the Bowling Green Falcons and Toledo Rockets. After dropping their first home match of the season to the Falcons, the Bulls bounced back for a 3-0 win over Toledo. Currently, the Bulls are in a three-way tie for first with Central Michigan and Bowling Green in the MAC standings.
Dating back to last season, the Bulls have the best home record of all MAC teams at 18-2 (.900). The Bulls out-muscle their opponents in Alumni Arena. In 2024, Buffalo has outhit the opposition .261 to .110 while averaging 5.45 more kills per set (14.04 to 8.59).
The Bulls' offense continues to be at the top of the conference. Buffalo is the only team in the MAC to have three players in the top-10 in points per set. Katrin Trebichavska leads the MAC with 4.73 points per set as Abby Leigh is eighth (3.88) and Manoela Forlin is 10th (3.83).
As a team, they're one of the best all-around squads in the MAC. Going with their 7-2 first place record in conference play, Buffalo holds the top marks in assists per set (13.19), kills per set (14.13), aces per set (2.03), digs per set (15.97) and opponent hitting percentage (.173).
Maria Futey is closing in on 1,500 career digs as she is just 10 away. She is also digging her way up to third all-time in program history in career digs. The senior is nearing Ann Reed's (1988-91) 1,525 digs. Futey would become just the fourth Bulls in program history to reach 1,500 career digs. Another milestone that looks to be broken is the all-time sets played record. A. Leigh is closing in on it as she has played 493 sets at Buffalo. Candi Sims (1993-96) holds the record with 503 sets played.
Following Tuesday's match, the Bulls will travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a weekend series against the Central Michigan Chippewas (16-5, 7-2 MAC).
