BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (6-0, 0-0 MAC) will travel to Cincinnati for the Xavier Invitational. The Invite will run from Friday, Sept. 8 through Saturday, Sept. 9.
The Bulls will open their competition against the Missouri Tigers (5-1, 0-0 SEC) at 10 a.m. on Friday. Later that evening, they'll play host Xavier (3-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) at 6:30 p.m. That match will be streamed on FloSports. On Saturday, UB will close their portion of the tournament against the Bellarmine Knights (2-4, 0-0 ASUN). The Bulls are 0-3 against Xavier all-time as it will be the first time they meet against Missouri and Bellarmine. The Musketeers defeated the Bulls at last year's UB Invite, 3-2.
The Bulls defended Alumni Arena last weekend nearly winning every match in straight sets. They dropped one set to Montana. This is just the third time in program history that the team is off to a 6-0 start. The two previous times came in 1989 and 2013 where they started off 13-0 and 12-0, respectively. Katrin Trebichavska was named the tournament MVP with Abby Leigh and Emma Gielas selected to the all-tournament team. On Monday, Mandy Leigh was named MAC East Setter of the Week after her performance during the UB Invite. She finished with team-highs with 101 assists and 36 digs, while adding 12 kills, and two blocks. She had a weekend hitting percentage of .391.
Through two weeks, the Bulls are climbing the national rankings. Courtney Okwara is 10th in the country and first in the MAC in hitting percentage at .506. Mandy Leigh has 205 total assists on the season which is 71st in the NCAA and fifth in the MAC. As a team, the Bulls are hitting at a rate of .267, that's 41st in the NCAA and first in the MAC. On the defensive side, Buffalo's opponents are hitting at a slim rate of .155, 52nd in the NCAA and first in the MAC.
