Sara Kelly hits grand slam to propel Bulls to victory
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo softball team (7-19, 1-1 MAC) split their Friday afternoon double header against the Toledo Rockets (10-13, 3-2 MAC).
The Bulls did not have much success against the Rockets in game one, as Toledo took it 11-1 after five innings of play.
In game two, Julia Tarantino earned her first victory of the season as Buffalo took down Toledo, 7-2.
Toledo took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a fielder's choice bunt. The Rockets added to their total in the third inning as a ground ball to first base was able to score the runner from third.
Buffalo answered in the bottom half of the inning as Sara Kelly hit her first career home run. She hit a grand slam scoring Madison Fernimen, Lily Lauck, and Alexis Lucyshyn. That gave the Bulls a 4-2 lead. Later in the inning, Avelyn Van Heyst doubled to the left center wall scoring Tarantino.
The Bulls padded their lead in the fourth inning with a Fernimen bases loaded walk. Fernimen wasn't done as she had an RBI double in the sixth inning.
Tarantino went the distance with seven innings pitched, striking out three, and allowing two runs on five hits.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at noon for game three of the series. The game will be played at D'Youville's Dobson Field.
