TOLEDO, Ohio – University at Buffalo women's basketball fifth year guard Jazmine Young had a career night, but UB's second half comeback came up short as the Bulls fell 91-73 at Toledo on Wednesday night.
Young scored her 1,000th career point on a beautiful and-one bucket in the fourth quarter. She tied a UB career-high with 20 points to lead the Bulls in scoring on the night.
It was a balanced offensive night for Buffalo with three other Bulls joining Young in double figures as Re'Shawna Stone scored 18 points to go with six rebounds and a season-high eight assists while freshman Hattie Ogden went 4-of-8 from behind the arc for 12 points. Fifth year Zakiyah Winfield narrowly missed out on a double-double as she finished with 10 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists and two steals.
The Rockets scored on their first possession of the game, but the Bulls answered with an 8-0 run, capped by back-to-back threes from Ogden, to take an early five-point lead. The Rockets made a pair of threes of their own to go up 13-10 at the first media timeout and then extended their run to 12-2 before Stone sliced to the basket for a layup to pull UB back within one possession with just under two minutes to go but the Rockets hit their fourth triple of the quarter to take a 22-16 lead at the end of the first.
The teams traded baskets early in the second quarter before Toledo used a 12-0 run to take a 38-20 lead at the 5:19 mark and UB would manage just one field goal over the final eight minutes as they trailed 41-23 at the half. The 18-point deficit was the largest faced by UB this season.
The Rockets continued to heat up from deep as they used an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 24 early in the third quarter. Young hit a triple and then cut to the basket for a layup off glass off the feed from Emerita Mashaire who then hit a three at the end of the shot clock to give the UB offense some rhythm, but the Rockets answered with a triple to go up 59-33 at the media timeout. Buffalo continued to fight as Young hit a three and knocked down a pair of free throws and then Stone drilled a three from the wing to cut the Toledo lead to 61-41 at the 3:24 mark. UB extended the run to 7-1 as Winfield scored on two straight possessions off a pair of assists from Stone and then Stone drained a three from the wing to pull UB within 19 at the end of the third.
Ogden continued to heat up as she hit a three early in the fourth quarter before the highlight of the night for UB as Young drove to the basket and got the bucket plus the foul and knocked down the ensuing free throw for her 1,000th career point. UB put together a mini run as Stone hit a mid-range jumper and Ogden followed with a three before Young got to the rim for her second and-one bucket of the quarter. The three-ball continued to fall for Buffalo as freshman Caelan Ellis drained a three from the wing and then UB got a pair of quick layups from Stone and Latrice Perkins and senior Olivia DeBortoli scored her first career bucket in the final seconds off a pass from Briyanna Baron.
Buffalo continued to shoot the ball well from deep as they connected on 10 threes for the second straight game. The Bulls also held a 30-22 edge in the paint but the Rockets dominated the glass, including turning 14 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points while adding 12 points off UB turnovers.
"I'm proud of the way our team fought tonight," said head coach Becky Burke. "To beat a team like Toledo you have to be almost perfect. We showed glimpses of what we are capable of and fought until the very end."
Up next, Buffalo concludes its road swing with a trip to Mount Pleasant for a contest against Central Michigan on Saturday, February 11 at 1pm.
