BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team (9-11, 4-7 MAC) closes out its two-game road swing with a trip to Mount Pleasant for a contest against Central Michigan on Saturday at 1pm.
The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with Matthew Jacobs (play-by-play) and Ben Clevenger (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520 AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 35th overall meeting between Buffalo and Central Michigan with the Chippewas owning a narrow 16-15 series advantage. The Bulls have won three straight meetings, most recently a 70-63 win at Alumni Arena on January 7.
Fifth year guard Jazmine Young scored her 1,000th career point but a second half comeback wasn't enough as Buffalo fell at Toledo on Wednesday night. Young led the Bulls in scoring, tying a UB career-high with 20 points. Re'Shawna Stone flirted with a triple double as she recorded 18 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Freshman Hattie Ogden scored 12 points on four made three-pointers and Zakiyah Winfield narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Winfield leads the team in rebounding and assists at 10.6 rpg and 4.0 apg while ranking second on the team in scoring at 14.9 ppg and has recorded 12 double-doubles on the season. She is the top rebounding guard in the nation and ranks in the top 20 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Stone is leading the Bulls in scoring at 15.2 ppg and has scored in double figures in 15 of the last 16 games while adding 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per contest. Young has scored in double figures in 17 of 20 games, including 11 straight, and is averaging 14.2 points and 1.6 assists per contest. The Bulls rank in the top half of the MAC in scoring defense (64.8), field goal percentage (43.2), assists per game (13.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (+0.9).
The Central Michigan Chippewas are 4-18 overall and 2-9 in the MAC after dropping a close contest, 68-63, at Kent State on Wednesday. Freshman guard/forward Sydney Harris leads the Chippewas in scoring at 17.4 ppg. Bridget Utberg (11.0 ppg) is also scoring in double figures while and Virginia Tech transfer Rochelle Norris (8.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.5 bpg) is also a main contributor. Harris and Utberg are the top two scoring freshmen in the MAC. Harris ranks second in the nation in three-point field goals made per game (3.27) and three-point field goal attempts (201) and seventh in total three pointers made (72). Graduate student forward Jahari Smith (6.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) returned to the floor on February 4 after being sidelined for more than two months, playing 15 minutes, but she did not play in Wednesday's contest against Kent State. Smith was one of only three players in the conference to average a double-double last season. CMU leads the MAC in offensive rebounds per game (14.4) and ranks fourth in total rebounding (37.7 rpg).
Up next, Buffalo will return to the friendly confines of Alumni Arena to open a two-game homestand, beginning on Wednesday, February 15 against Kent State.
