BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo men's basketball team (12-12, 6-5 MAC) defeated the Eastern Michigan Eagles (6-18, 3-8 MAC) in a high scoring affair at Alumni Arena on Tuesday evening, 102-97. LaQuill Hardnett and Isaiah Adams led the Bulls with 21 points each as there were six players finishing in double figures. Zid Powell (14), Curtis Jones (13), Isaac Jack (12), and Jonnivius Smith (12) rounded out the top scorers for the Bulls. Adams and Jack had a game-high eight rebounds apiece as Armoni Foster recorded a career-high 11 assists.
It was a rare occasion where both teams shot over 50.0% in the game, with the advantage going to the visitors. This marked the second time this season the Bulls snuck out a win despite their opponent shooting 50.0% or better from the floor. Buffalo finished 35-for-67 (52.2%) from the floor and 11-for-27 (40.7%) from three-point range.
To start the contest, both teams played at a slower pace as it was only 25-21 with eight minutes to go in the first. The offensive attack heated up as the teams combined for 46 in the final eight minutes of the first half. Despite Buffalo making 50.0% (16-of-32) of their shots from the floor, the Eagles were 17-of-29 (58.6%). 13 three-pointers were made in the opening 20-minutes, two of which came from Hardnett who had 12 first half points, a team-high.
The Bulls carried their offense into the second half as they went on a 25-11 run to take a 69-60 lead off an Adams three-pointer. The swift ball handling from Foster led to seven assists for the graduate guard in the half. The tempo was fast as Buffalo scored 58 points to Eastern Michigan's 49. The Buffalo defense held the Eagles to just one second half three-pointer, finishing the half 1-for-10. They had started the half 0-for-8 from beyond the arc.
With the Eagles scoring 97 points, Emoni Bates scored 27 points as Tyson Acuff had a game-high 35 points.
Foster is the first Bull since Ronaldo Segu (2/25/2021 vs. Central Michigan) to have at least 10 assists.
With the win, Buffalo now extends their February win streak to 14 games, the longest active streak in the nation.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 against Kent State at 6 p.m. The game will be aired nationally on ESPN2.
