HAMPTON, Va. – The University at Buffalo softball team (3-10, 0-0 MAC) competed at the Spartan-Pirate Classic co-hosted by Norfolk State and Hampton. The Bulls finished 2-3 for the duration of the tournament, picking up wins against Norfolk State and Saint Peter's.
GAME 1 VS. STONY BROOK
The Bulls failed to get the bats going in their opening game of the tournament. They were only able to record three hits which wasn't going to be enough as the Seawolves racked up eight runs in four innings.
After a scoreless first two innings, the Seawolves scored three runs in the third inning. Stony Brook rounded the bases five times in the fourth inning to force a potential eight-run rule. The Bulls had no answer as they lost 8-0.
GAME 2 VS. NORFOLK STATE
The Bulls picked up a 3-0 win against the Norfolk State Spartans. In the win, Alexis Lucyshyn was dominant in the circle. She finished with a career-high 14 strikeouts and only allowed just four hits.
Sara Kelly started the scoring in the second inning as she hit in Tianna Williams on a double to center. The Bulls added insurance runs in the fifth inning. On a pass ball, Avelyn Van Heyst scored and Brianna Castro advanced to third. Madison Fernimen hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Castro to score.
GAME 3 VS. HAMPTON
Buffalo fell to co-host Hampton on Saturday morning, 2-1. The Pirates scored in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch. Lyla Ambrose tied the game at one in the fifth inning as Tianna Williams doubled. Williams was stranded at second as Abbey Nagel flew out to left to end the fifth for the Bulls.
In dramatic fashion, Hampton would get the game winning run on base off a walk with two outs in the seventh. The baserunner then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Taylor Ivey of Hampton doubled to the outfield as the Pirated walked off to secure a 2-1 win.
Lucyshyn went 6.2 innings allowing one earned run and striking out seven.
GAME 4 VS. COLGATE
The Bulls dropped the contest against the Colgate Raiders on Saturday afternoon, 3-0. Buffalo recorded two hits against the Raiders coming from Fernimen and Kelly. Tianna Williams and Lily Lauck also reached base via base on balls.
Julia Tarantino pitched all six innings and allowed just one earned run as the Bulls finished with three errors. In her efforts, she struck out six Raiders.
Due to inclement weather, the game was called after six innings of action.
GAME 5 VS. SAINT PETER'S
The Bulls picked up their second win of the tournament to close out the weekend. In an 8-6 victory over the Peacocks, Buffalo overcame an early 3-0 deficit. To get the offense going was Alexis Lucyshyn with a solo home run in the fourth inning. The Bulls rallied in the fourth inning as they carried that momentum to score six more runs. Madison Fernimen had an RBI single to score Brianna Castro. With the bases loaded, Candice Ripine was hit by a pitch. Just like that, the game was tied at three. Tianna Williams was walked allowing Fernimen to score. Abbey Nagel followed suit and got walked as Kate Vara to touch home. The Bulls batted around as Lucyshyn then had a two-RBI single to give the Bulls a 7-3 lead.
Saint Peter's scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut into Buffalo's lead. The Bulls added an insurance run in the fifth inning with a Ripine RBI single. The Peacocks' comeback fell short as they scored one in the bottom of the seventh.
Lucyshyn started the game and went 3.1 innings and earned the win. Coming in relief was Julia Tarantino who pitched 3.2 innings and allowed just one run.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, March 3 as they'll travel to South Carolina. Buffalo will play Presbyterian College and Queens University of Charlotte at the PC Invitational.
