ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team battled to a big 4-3 road victory at Cornell on Friday afternoon. With the win, UB improves to 7-2 on the season.
The win is UB's first against Cornell in over a decade, with the last dual match victory coming on February 6, 2010.
The Bulls took the doubles point, which proved to be the difference as the two teams split singles action. Ambre Amat and Pia Schwarz came away with a 6-2 win at two and Gabriella Akopyan and Basak Akbas clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at third doubles.
After Cornell picked up wins at first, second and fourth singles, Amat continued her hot play with a 6-3, 6-3 win at fifth singles and Mariana Carvajal Torres followed with a straight set 6-3, 6-3 victory of her own at sixth doubles to tie the match at three. Senior Azra Deniz Comlek dropped the first set but stormed back to take the match in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 for the clinching point.
Buffalo returns to action next weekend when they will host three matches at Miller Tennis Center, beginning with a contest against Cleveland State on Friday, February 24 at 2pm.
