
Bulls Wrap Up Day Two of BU Valentine Invite, Compete at Spire Collegiate Indoor Games

BOSTON – The University at Buffalo men's track and field team competed at Day Two of the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University on Saturday afternoon.
Ryan Buzby broke the UB School Record in the men's 5000m, running 14:18.60, eclipsing the previous record set by All-MAC performer Barrett Kemp in 2017 of 14:20.01. Buzby's time ranks #5 in the MAC. Also running new personal best times were Alex Hislop in 14:45.13 and Will Marchant in 14:46.42. Sophomore Cory Demo established a new personal best in the Mile by nearly 6-seconds, running 4:12.40, a time that ranks him #9 All-Time for UB and #13 in the MAC. Freshman teammate Noah Brightman also ran a personal best of 4:17.07. Hans Matzal ran a season's best in the 800m of 1:53.25, ranking #12 in the MAC. Senior Chinemerem Ononiwu placed 12th in the Invitational 60HH (8.24), and Jermaine Ewers placed 12th in the Invitational 60m in 6.93.
The Bulls also had a squad competing at the Spire Collegiate Invitational in Geneva, OH with several breakout performances. Highlighting the day for the men were the 800m runners. Sophomore Fernando Sanchez ran to a 2-second personal best 1:56.50 and pulled along freshman teammate Gabe Watson to a season's best 1:58.03. Sophomore Aaron Essien ran a personal best in the 400m of 50.48. Sanchez, Watson, Essien and Patrick Ames ran a great 4 x 400m with Sanchez anchoring in 49.05, winning their heat and placing 3rd overall. Kevin Gabalski and Kyle Waymen advanced to finals in the 60HH, both running new personal best times of 8.41, with Gabalski taking the edge in 4th place and Waymen in 5th place. They tied for #11 in the MAC with their new marks. Jaron Meyer ran a season's best of 22.43/200m and Elijah Kerner stepped down to the short sprints and ran a personal best of 7.18/60m. In the field events, Calvin Finger had a strong performance in the High Jump, clearing 6'6.00"/1.98, narrowly missing 6'7.25. In the men's Shot Put, the Bulls went 4-6-12 with Surdej, Przybocki and Smith.
The women also achieved many new personal bests and season-best marks at the Collegiate Games. Highlighting the day was the 1-2 finish in the women's triple Jump, with Emily Tait jumping a season's best of 38'1.25"/11.61m, and senior Naiomi Meran jumping a new Personal Best of 37'11.25"/11.56m. Grad student Teasha McKoy took home a pair of second places in the Shot Put and Weight Throw, and Imahni Sinclair had a new personal best in the weight throw of 55'8.25"/16.97 moving her to #9 in the MAC. The track also proved to be fast for the Bulls. Senior Travasia Singletary ran a season's best 7.99/60m, just missing advancing to the finals. She placed 12th in the 68-woman field. Safiya Dodoo ran two personal best marks, 27.12/200m and 1:02.50/400m. In the women's 800m, all three UB women set new personal best marks. Redshirt Freshman Allison Newton ran 2:17.66, improving her time by nearly 3-seconds. Freshman Alyssa Rotondo had another 2-second personal best, running 2:23.59, and combined event specialist Kelsey Shapiro ran a personal best 2:28.24. Freshman Bronagh Cassidy took 20-seconds off her previous season's best in the mile, running 5:26.32, and freshman Lauren O'Rourke ran a personal best of 5:27.58. Freshman Anna Recktenwalt ran a personal best of 5:33.27 with teammate Hannah Sullivan just behind in a season's best 5:33.37. In the 3000m, freshman Lexi Bernard had a season's best of 11:01.08, Brianna Urban ran a big personal best mark of 11:04.57, and Libby Powers ran 11:26.79, less than 1 second off her personal best set the week before at Cornell.
