BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team heads on the road for the first time this season as they travel to Norfolk, VA to take on Old Dominion in the inaugural MAC-Sun Belt Challenge on Saturday at Chartway Arena.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Chip Tarkenton (play-by-play) and Kim Aston (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on AM 1400 or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the first-ever meeting between the Bulls and Monarchs. UB is 5-3 all-time against the Sun Belt Conference.
Buffalo used a strong second half performance to defeat crosstown rival Canisius 69-60 in the regular season opener at Alumni Arena on Monday night. Four Bulls scored in double figures led by redshirt senior guard Chellia Watson who scored a game-high 21 points to go with six rebounds and six assists. Freshman Kirsten Lewis-Williams turned in a stellar performance in the first game of her UB career, scoring 16 points, and senior guard Rana Elhusseini added 12 points. Sophomore Hattie Ogden nearly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. As a team, the Bulls turned defense into offense, scoring 21 points off 18 Golden Griffins' turnovers while adding 12 fastbreak points and owning a 34-22 edge in the paint.
Old Dominion is 1-0 overall after defeating Lincoln (Pa.) University 72-50 in the season opener on Monday. ODU was picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll. The Monarchs finished the 2022-23 season with a 22-12 overall record and 12-6 league mark, reaching the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship before falling to eventual champion James Madison. They also owned the league's best record at home, going 13-2 at Chartway Arena. The Monarchs return five players, including starters in Kaye Clarke (8.6ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.0 apg) and Jordan McLaughlin (8.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.4 apg), from last season while also welcoming 10 transfers. Delisha Milton-Jones, a 2022 Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee and a two-time Olympic gold medalist with a decorated professional career in the WNBA and overseas is in her fourth year at the helm of the Monarchs. Under her guidance the Monarchs landed on CollegeInsider's Mid-Major Top 25 poll four times last season, ranking as high as No. 18.
Up next, Buffalo return home to host its second Big 4 opponent, Niagara, on Tuesday, November 14. Tipoff at Alumni Arena is set for 6pm.
