Bulls Effort Comes Up Short Against Top-Seeded Broncos

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The University at Buffalo women's volleyball team (19-5, 9-3 MAC) fell to the top-seeded Western Michigan Broncos (22-2, 12-0 MAC) on Friday evening. The Bulls fall to third overall in the MAC standings after the loss and a Ball State win.
The Bulls won the first set, 25-23, but then lost three straight to close the match, 25-27, 18-25, 18-25. UB's offense struggled to find a rhythm against the Broncos as they were out hit, .307 to .208. In total, Western Michigan finished with 66 kills and 15 attack errors. UB racked up 56 kills, but had 21 attack errors.
The Bulls nearly led wire-to-wire in the first set as the Broncos tied the set at one. With UB leading 22-17, a 4-0 Bronco run led to a timeout. Katrin Trebichavska closed the set with a kill. Courtney Okwara finished with seven first set kills, a set high. The Bulls hit .333 as the Broncos hit .351.
The second set marked the most lead changes on the night. There were 12 ties and seven lead changes. The Bulls had the opportunity to go up two sets to none but could not close it out. UB was at set point twice, but the Broncos capitalized on an attack error and an ace. Western Michigan won the set, closing it on a 5-1 run.
The third and fourth sets went Western Michigan's way as the Bulls offensive struggles continued. The Broncos had 35 kills to UB's 24. In the third set, the Bulls kept it close and even led 14-13, but the Broncos were hot and shut down the Bulls. Western Michigan closed the set on a 12-4 run. In the fourth set, UB found themselves in a 6-1 hole and could not find the momentum to come back.
This marked the third consecutive game where four Bulls had at least 10 kills. Okwara led with 13 as both Stacia Gollogly and Abby Liegh had 12. Trebichavska added 11 kills for the Bulls.
After a 46-assist night, Mandy Leigh moved to sixth all-time in program history in career assists. She passed Dani Robert (2010-13 / 3,234) as she's now up to 3,275 assists. Somer Deschambault (1996-99 / 3,699) is fifth in UB history.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at Northern Illinois. The match is set to start at 5 p.m. ET.
