Bulls Continue MAC Play with a Pair of Important Games

BUFFALO, NY - As the regular season winds down and the standings tighten, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (6-3-6, 3-2-3 MAC) continues Mid-American Conference play this week with a pair of big games. The Bulls host Toledo on Thursday night before traveling to Kalamazoo for a clash with the Western Michigan Broncos on Sunday at 1pm.
On Thursday, it will be the 29th meeting between Buffalo and Toledo with the Bulls holding a 14-12-2 series advantage. The Bulls have won four of the last five meetings with the Rockets, most recently a 1-0 win at Paul Hotmer Field last season.
On Sunday, Buffalo and Western Michigan will meet for the 31st time with the Bulls owning a narrow 12-11-7 series edge. The Bulls and Broncos played to a 1-1 draw at UB Stadium a year ago.
Buffalo went 1-0-1 over the weekend as the Bulls picked up a 2-0 win at Northern Illinois on Thursday before playing to a scoreless draw with Bowling Green on Sunday. Sophomore Katie Krohn scored the game-winner early in the first half while junior Arianna Zumpano added an insurance goal in the 60th minute to power the Bulls to victory over the Huskies. Senior Rebecca Winslow recorded back-to-back shutouts while tying her career-high with five saves in each game, earning her MAC Defensive Player of the Wee khonors.
Krohn leads the MAC with 12 goals on the year while also leading the league and ranking in the top 20 in the nation in goals per game (0.80), total points (26), points per game (1.73). She also ranks in the top five in the league in total shots (42) and shots per game (2.8). Fifth year midfielder Leah Wengender has recorded three goals and five assists while Zumpano has also scored three goals on the year. Winslow leads the Bulls between the pipes, compiling a 2-2-4 overall record with four shutouts. She has made 22 saves while recording a .667 save percentage and 1.38 goals against average.
Toledo enters Thursday's match with a 7-6-2 overall record and a 4-3-1 mark in league play after seeing a five-game win streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss at Miami (OH) on Sunday. Redshirt senior forward Madison Medalle leads the Rockets offensively with seven goals and four assists. Sophomore Kaema Amachree has scored five goals and junior Mia Leonetti has added four goals on the year. In net, Toledo is led by redshirt freshman Brielle Young who has made 65 saves and owns a 0.823 save percentage and a 1.04 goals against average in 13 starts.
Western Michigan is unbeaten in conference play and sits atop the standings with a 9-3-3 overall and 5-0-3 league record after defeating Miami (OH) and Eastern Michigan last week. Graduate student forward Jen Blitchok and senior forward Abby Werthman lead the Broncos offensively with five goals apiece while nine other players have recorded at least one goal on the year. Western Michigan is led between the pipes by junior Lauren Boafo who has made 33 saves and has recorded a .733 save percentage and a 0.80 goals against average across 15 games.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will close out the regular season on Thursday, October 26 with an afternoon matinee against Kent State at UB Stadium at 3pm.
