Bulls Host Ball State in Rematch of MAC Championship Game

BUFFALO, NY – Winners of three straight, the University at Buffalo women's basketball team (8-5, 3-1 MAC) hosts Ball State in a battle of 3-1 teams on Wednesday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls are looking to start 4-1 in conference play for the third straight season.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Paul Peck (play-by-play) and Matt Mattia (color) announcing and can be heard on the radio on ESPN 1520AM or on the Varsity Network with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
This is the 36th overall meeting between Buffalo and Ball State with the Cardinals owning a narrow 19-16 series advantage. The teams split the regular season matchups season ago, before the Bulls defeated the Cardinals 75-71 in the MAC Championship game.
Buffalo dominated from start to finish as they cruised to a 78-59 win over Eastern Michigan at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. Buffalo was led by their superb backcourt once again as three Bulls scored 20+ on the day, led by Zakiyah Winfield who recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and a career-high 17 rebounds to go with five assists and three steals. Re'Shawna Stone narrowly missed out on a double-double of her own with 20 points and eight rebounds and Jazmine Young also scored 20 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Stone leads the team in scoring (14.6 ppg) while adding 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest and has scored in double figures in nine straight games, including back-to-back 20-point efforts. Winfield leads the team rebounding at 11.5 rebounds per game while also scoring 14.5 ppg and adding 3.9 apg and has recorded 10 double-doubles on the season. She is the top rebounding guard in the nation and ranks in the top 10 in the nation in double-doubles, rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. Young has scored in double figures in 10 of 13 games and is averaging 13.9 points and 1.7 assists per contest. The Bulls lead the MAC in scoring defense (59.5) and rebounding defense (33.7) while ranking in the top half of the conference in field goal defense (39.7), 3FG defense (28.6), field goal percentage (43.8) and scoring margin (+4.0).
The Ball State Cardinals are 13-4 overall and 3-1 in the MAC after dismantling Miami (OH) 92-61 on Saturday. Redshirt Senior Anna Clephane leads the Cardinals in scoring at 13.6 ppg. Thelma Dis Agustsdottir (13.1 ppg) and Ally Becki (11.7 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 4.8 apg) are also scoring in double figures. Clephane became the 10th 1,000-point scorer under head coach Brady Sallee with 25 points against Miami (OH). Sophomore Marie Kiefer currently sits in 12th place all-time in blocked shots with 73, including 25 this season and an average of 1.5 blocks per contest. Dis Agustsdottir currently leads the team with 53 threes so far this season. With six threes against Miami (OH), Agustsdottir now sits at 271 total 3-pointers for her career, good for third place in program history. Nationally the Cardinals rank 21st in scoring offense (79.2), 22nd in 3-pointers per game (8.5), 38th in 3-point field goal attempts (24.7), 33rd in field goal percentage (45.7), 36th in assists per game (16.5), 63rd in free throw attempts (19.8), 70th in free throws made per game (13.9) and 49th in winning percentage (80.0). The Cardinals currently sit at No. 8 in the latest College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 poll, the highest of any MAC teams.
